Anticipating the truck scene [SPOILERS!]

I have to say I had a slight suspicion that the film would come to this, since the opening scene where we see her riding her bike. Why would the film open with such a short and purposefully incomplete scene if it was not going to lead to a turning point in the story.

Moreover, [[SPOILERS FOR A BBC DRAMA mini-series - if you've seen it you know which one I mean ]] I have already been "traumatised" by an almost identical scene in the BBC series "Single Father",so I would have been fearing that ending even if the scene had ended up being just a random shot connecting two scenes

When it comes to the actual scene, the whole length of it and style of filming could only lead to that specific ending. It was long enough to make us suspect what was coming, the only clever addition was when she turned to that pedestrian alley, at which point I thought "well, what do you know, maybe she doesn't get hit after all" and right when I start doubting, BAM comes the truck scene. I think I shouted something like "Jesus! *beep*!"

I was looking to see if anyone posted about this. My sentiments exactly

whats funny is at this point, i had just finished saying, "i feel like something bad is going to happen and i'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop." and then less than a minute later BAM!

Nicholls never should have started the screenplay with that 2006 bike ride beginning. The novel begins in Emma's dorm room during 1988. That is where it should have started leaving no anticipation for the shocking twist.

I believe many parts should have been included and wrote a lengthy thread about it. Just look for my screen name.

Good call there, elliest_5

The film would have been fantastic if it had started in 1988 as suggested above... without the 2006 bike ride at the beginning

And ended with her lying on the pavement... what an ending that would have been... 2006 bike ride... turn down the lane... BAM... dead... all that had gone on was over with no resolution...

Fantastic... that would have been...

Instead the whole thing was schmaltzy, soppy pap

I mean just as she left that voicemail message to the guy you knew she was as good as dead. My question is, do people in England just not look both ways when riding bikes? I mean, she was literally crossing commuter streets without any care in the world. You don't even stop when you get to the end of the alley just to see if there's any oncoming vehicles?

Maybe Anne Hathaway is not used to cars driving on the wrong side of the street?

i thought it was very predictable that one or the other of them would have to die fairly close to the ending.

The only reason I am going to finish this awful movie is to see emma get hit by the truck.

I knew about the scene because a bitch ex-girlfriend of mine ranted about it on Facebook.
