How are people saying this is the greatest love storys of all time? WTF!!!! That guy was an *beep* from beginning to end. This just points out how *beep* stupid women are for falling for guys who treat them like dirt and only lookout for number one. This was just awful. Anne of course is wonderful. But why did they go all out to make him such a *beep* *beep* all the time.
He grew up. He wasn't a jerk at the end. He treated Emma well during their marriage. He had an honorable profession, running his shop/café. Lots of young people (men and women, both) act poorly in their youth and change their ways as they mature.
I would guess you stopped paying attention somewhere halfway through the movie. First of all, if women didn't fall in love with *beep* women would never fall in love. Every man's an *beep* in his own special way. But Dexter was not a jerk from beginning to end. At the beginning, he was just a guy, just like all young horny guys are. Then when he spiraled into drugs, she walked out of his life. It wasn't until he cleaned up his act, got straight, got married and became a father that she became friends with him again. Women aren't stupid, I think we're just better at loving than men are. We love with our whole hearts and souls, and we can love someone even though they aren't good for us and they don't belong in our lives. But by the time Dex and Em got married, Dex had grown up considerably, and he was a good husband. He just did't know how to deal with the tragedy, and it was climactic irony that he finally had something in common with his father. And what a thing to have in common with his father. I actually enjoyed this movie much more than gushy romantic slop like the Notebook. This is much closer to love in real life.
I quite liked The Notebook, but it's good to see someone else who gets how much Dexter changes through the course of this film. I didn't much like him at the beginning of the movie, but by the end, I did. And even at the beginning, he had a certain sweetness to him underneath his self-centeredness.

There are plenty of women on this board who would not, and are complaining about why anyone would be interested in someone who treated them like that, let alone for twenty years!
I agree with you that the character is a selfish twat, but I point out to you that the writer of the book and the screenplay is a man and what he writes about women isn't necessarily as accurate.
