Why Does Tina Like Jimmy Jr.?...

He's built like a pear and he has an annoying lisp. Also Zeke is always playfully jumping him, and winning. So why the hell is this kid the most popular boy in school, let alone worthy of Tina's affection? Nobody else likes him, so he should really be crazy for Tina. She's a sweetheart. All the kids are great. Bring back Josh and let Jimmy jr stew. Tina deserves someone who likes her back.

My guess is that it's because in the universe that is Bob's Burgers, he's "cute." Personally, I think Jimmy Jr. is largely a douche, but to her he's a skinny blond boy, who dances and plays sports, and appears to be popular (or at least generally accepted amongst more popular circles.) All of this probably makes him appealing to Tina's pubescent mind, and his usually aloof but sometimes warm towards here probably just piques her obsession all the more. I'm hoping the writers eventually turn the page on Tina's infatuation with him, though, because it's old.

I have never had the impression that he is the most popular boy in school. Hmm. Is there a specific episode where this is stated or implied?

Off the top of my head, there was "The Millie-churian Candiate" where Jimmy Jr was a sure win for class president because of his popularity, until Louise inadvertently made Jimmy jr. look bad when she went off on Millie.
Then, there was "Carpe Museum", where Tina and Henry both try to prove that the other is the geek. And when Tina says Hi to Jimmy jr, she tells Henry that he may not know him because he's one of the most popular boys in school. Henry insists that he does know Jimmy, until he says Hi to him and Jimmy calls him by the wrong name.
Again, I have no idea why. The kid's a douche.

Oh, okay. I guess i just never thought about it much. Often times crushes are inexplicable so it could just be one of those things. :)

Well to be fair, I think Tina simply likes him because that just happens to be the boy her little heart desires, not because of his popularity. She's not shallow that way. She'd probably give any boy that likes her a chance before snubbing her nose up at him. I think she even crushed on Darryl for a few minutes in one episode. But now that I'm writing to you, I think you may have helped me answer my own question. Sure Tina could and should move on from her Jimmy crush, but I think the reason she has a hard time moving on is because he was her first crush. The boy who lived right across the street that she happened to grow up with. Not just a school crush, but a familiar crush. Even still, I'd rather they bring back Josh, who genuinely liked her back, than have her continuously pine for Jimmy jr. Even Zeke's funnier. I like when he misunderstood something in "The Millie-churian Candiate" and said to Henry "Your hair looks like a weasel" lol! But I still have no clue as to why the lisping pear is popular. Thanx for helping me get to my revelation though. lol! =)

I always thought Lenny Destefano was the most popular.

reply

Because she just hit puberty and Jimmy Jr. is accessible and (I suppose) attractive to her.

It may be more of a case of her hormones speaking than her analyzing the pros and cons of Jimmy Jr's personality.

She likes his butt, that's all.

reply

I think his proximity might also have something to do with it. He lives right across the street from her. More than likely, his was the first butt Tina saw as her hormones started to kick in. A girl NEVER forgets her first time! 
