The consensus was, Daniel came off too creepy. They made him a girl, and voilà! Total tone change.

Changing her to a female doesn't change a thing about that. What a sexist double standard. As if women can't be perverted, disturbing creeps. She's also just plain gross. Btw, they didn't change the character to female because of concerns that it would be too pervy or creepy to keep it male. According to http://screenprism.com/insights/article/how-is-bobs-burgers-different-from-its-original-pitch Fox executives thought the character as a boy would be too similar to Gene the younger brother.
