I don't know what's wrong with cinema nowadays. The movie started really good but where is the story? This is film, not real life, what's the point of a movie that is like a voyeuristic fly on the wall thing? That is random and goes nowhere? That's not telling a story, that's just wank.
I agree, I'm guessing we all missed a bunch of clever metaphores cause what's presented up front is a boring, self-righteous, pretentious piece of nothingness about a bunch of idiots. Some more stupid than others. I guess the son of the cult-leader is the only non-idiot as he realised that the cult was just bs, as the movie is. I wonder if that's the clever metaphore we're looking for, that this movie is masquaraded as something outstanding just like the cult while actually being nothing? And just like the cultleader fools his followers, PTA fools his viewers. But not this puppy, no no.
I couldn't watch more than 30 minutes. Sure, I'll agree there's some great acting going on but it's too bizarre like when he's making a scene at the store and screwing the sand sculpture. Not that I'm a prude but it reminds me one of those 70's movie that had shocking scenes like this and was considered to be great just on those terms alone.

If you watch films just for entertainment purposes, you should never watch a paul Thomas Anderson film again. Go watch transformers if you are only in it for the entertainment. Film is an art form, not a novelty.
