After multiple viewings I've come to the conclusion that Freddy is actually maybe 25. That's why Dodd always referring to him as a young man. That's why Doris was so large and that's why he was so incredibly inmature. I think PTA had a middle aged actor portray him because the war and heartache aged Freddie and messed him up.

shareI think PTA just decided that Phoenix was right for the part, even if he wasn't a great fit physically. And his being older than the character does get across that he's been through a lot. That's not a bad point.
