stellar performance by Joaquin Phoenix

I can't say I particularly liked the film, but Phoenix was amazing in it. How did he fail to be Oscar nominated for that performance?

Philip Seymour Hoffman was excellent as well, leaving behind his usual voice and mannerisms.

He was Oscar nominated. I thought he deserved to win. DDL was good as Lincolin, but I preferred Phoenix's daringly original performance as Freddie and I loved "The Master". For me, it was an absolutely riveting movie with three fantastic performances by Phoenix, PSH and Amy Adams who, by the way, were all Oscar nominated.

I agree with the OP. Phoenix put 200% into the role. One of the most amazing scenes to me was when the police officers brought him into his cell and he was resisting them all the way. Joaquin was fighting like a tiger in that scene and the scene following when he was banging his head on the bed.

I agree completely. The scene with Philip Seymour "processing" was mind blowing.

The processing scene was rated the Number One Movie Scene of all Time in a video Top Ten List put out by Cinefix. Not sure that I would put it at number one, but it is an excellent scene.

Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar and doesn't.

I did like the movie, but I agree with you about the performance.

reply

Agreed. Excellent performance by JP and Phillip.

I thought Hoffman was brilliant as always, but with Joaquin, I kinda get the impression that he just got into character, got seriously (almost dangerously) drunk, then delivered and performed his lines while doing so. It's been done many times before like in Nil By Mouth.
