Enjoyed The Film In Spite Of A Few Bad Points

Hey folks,

Yes, there were some bad things in some of the sets. Most of the problems I noticed were the modern hardware on doors, the doors themselves, the use of OSB sheets, some of the firearms stretched things a bit, and the open set walls intersecting with no ceiling was a big mistake. Having said that about the sets and props, I thought the story was a good story, and the acting was better than a lot I have seen in many of the westerns I have been watching for over 60 years. The costumes seemed to me to be pretty convincing for the period.

I probably would not have noticed some of the set and prop problems if I had not read all the negative comments made by other folks on another thread. In spite of those "problems," I would think a western fan would find this film to be a worthwhile film, and I thought all the main actors did a very good job in their roles. I could point out Van Dyke, Meed, Mears, and Evigan as being very credible, but the other supporting folks were also good.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

Yeah, there were simply some technical flaws in sets and props. But I didn;t let that taint my enjoyment of the film. The only thing I disagree with was Evigan. I thought he was wrong for the role he was playing. Then again, if his being sheriff was the result of being bullied or coerced into that position, i could see him as the "unwilling sheriff" who is forced to take on more than he can chew.

Botany Bay? Bought on Ebay?!! Oh NO!!!

The first off putting thing to me was the wife's dress. I was okay with it being frilly and white because perhaps it was herwedding dress and she pulled it out for special occasions such as her husband's birthday. But the fact that the back was so low cut and below that was a cut out down to her rear - WOULD HAVE BEEN SCANDALOUS! Only someone in a dance hall would have a hole cutout in the back of their dress. And where was her under sheath? Decent women set a lot of store by that, no matter how hot the weather, a woman did not go without her underwear.

I understand this wasn't a big budget movie - and I understand if they had to salvage a bin on a back lot to find a dress, but it would cost next to nothing to sew a faux lace insert (with no skin showing through) into the dress. Since they never say the year, I won't hold them too much to task for the length of her dresses.

With that lack of effort for something so easily fixed and so glaringly obvious, I knew what to expect for the rest of the movie.

Hey Ramona,

Your point is well taken. They had a good story to tell, and I think the actors were up to the job of performing that story. It is simply too bad the director and other folks could not see the production problems that could have been fixed or at least improved enough to make the film better.

Glaringly obvious? Yes, I think you are right - there were a bunch of glaringly obvious issues. I just like good stories, and I have had a long appreciation of Westerns, so I tried to push the glaringly obvious issues out of my mind in my effort to enjoy what was an otherwise good Western for me. You are right, however. They certainly could have fixed or at least improved a bunch of those sore thumbs.

Best wishes,

Hi, David

I love Westerns and the idea of this story had me excited to see what they'd do with it but I was very disappointed.

To be honest though, I didn't notice the hardware issues because I'm not much of a tool person myself. :)

But very few Westerns focus on women so I expected this one to give the woman who's at the center of this piece her due.

I thought the actress should have given more when the two boys were shot. Perhaps that's the director's fault but I felt it lacked emotion except for the scenes where the director said "now cry and mention your boys". Even if there was no time to verbalize that grief and outrage, couldn't her body language or have her go limp as the men were holding her when they shot the children?

I rarely just don't like a film (I'm the only person on the planet that liked Battlefield Earth) but this film made me angry that I'd wasted my time watching it.

I did not think the story was bad at all, but I could not get caught up in the story because the really bad acting kept distracting me.

I actually feel sorry for the guy playing the main baddie because I see he wrote it and it could have been as good as any Western with just a little bit of effort.
