Right now the rating for this movie is 6.1 out of 10 but I would think it would at least be a 7.5 or an 8. When I saw it there wasn't a dry eye in the house and people really seemed to think it was the best movie they've seen this summer. I know I was a fan but so was everyone I saw it with and they usually don't enjoy movies like this
I haven't seen this film yet, but I've heard good things, and so I decided to check out it's IMDb page. What really surprises me are the voting statistics (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1554091/ratings)---39.9% of all voters gave the movie a 10, the film has a mean average of 7.5 and a median of 9, and yet the weighted average is 6.1. A lot of factors go into calculating the weighted average, and IMDb likes to remain mum on how they do it exactly, but it seems (IMO) that the top 1000 voters play a large part in it, and the top 1000 voters have given this movie an average of 4.8. Another interesting statistic: Males under 18 gave it an average of 2.8, and females under 18 gave it an average of 10. In my (admittedly limited) experience I've found that females under 18 usually give a lower score than males unless the movie is, like, a Twilight movie or something.
I don't want to discount people who genuinely disliked the film, but I think it is quite likely the lowered rating is due to people hearing of the subject matter and giving it a low rating due to their beliefs and feelings about illegal immigrants. It's annoying when anyone votes on things they haven't seen.

I don't want to get into a discussion about conspiracy theories on IMDB ratings but I felt the film deserves better than a 6.4. The film isn't without its flaws but it's a great father / son drama with a great performance by Bichir. More in the region of 7.5 for me.
I think some people deliberately vote down the film because of the subject matter; they don't agree with illegal immigration and thus they give it a low score. Although, I do realize there might be some people who honestly didn't like the film.
I don't know how the ratings system works, but if you look at the specific ratings, 75% of all the ratings are above a 7, so if the rating was averaged using the mean, it's probably going to be a lot lower than using the mode. The mode is like 8.
