Outstanding performance by Demián Bichir

I just saw this movie, and Bichir's performance was really great. I especially liked the scene where his character is about to be deported and he's saying goodbye to his son. A stunning portrayal. I'd love to see him get an Oscar nomination, though he seems like a longshot. However, he does have a SAG nomination for Best Actor. So, maybe he might wind up with an Oscar nomination.

I just viewed the movie yesterday, cuz I'm a SAG member I've been receiving DVD's in the mail and getting free rentals on ITunes... Anyway, I completely agree. In fact, as a result, my vote for best actor is for him. Really beautiful performance!!

I completely agree. His performance blew me away. I, too, am a member of SAG and will be voting for Demian Bichir but I would be very surprised if he actually won. I lost faith in the validity of Hollywood awards when Julia Roberts swept for Erin Brockovich over Ellen Burstyn's brilliantly disturbing role in Requiem for a dream. I would think SAG, a union comprised of actors would've given it to Burstyn but, no... Hollywood is all about politics.

I predict the "Best Actor" award will go to Georgy boy, the most overrated actor in Hollywood.

I completely agree with you! I know that I can keep my integrity intact and not give into politics even though the outcome will be predictable... And about Julia Roberts, I totally agree. Ellen Burstyn's performance is unforgettable, whereas, all I can remember about Erin Brockovich is that I wanted more Albert Finney...

I was going to vote for George, but now I'm not so sure. I still have to see a few more movies (not that I mind :D). I wonder how many members really take the time to watch them all to get an informed decision?

reply

You know, I completely agree... I just watched THE DESCENDANTS the other day and was really impressed with George Clooney's performance...so I judged too soon...and now, darn it, I'm split...oh well...I'm glad I am able to see every performance and as you say make an informed decision...Thanks for the reminder!

What was so impressive about George Clooney's performance? I'm not trying to offend anyone so I want to preface this by saying this is my opinion and not a criticism of anyone else's.

Clooney is the same in everything. The Descendants was George Clooney playing George Clooney in Hawaii. Up in the Air was George Clooney in an airplane. Michael Clayton was George Clooney in a suit. I found The Descendants to be one of the most boring films of the year and Clooney, as usual, was the emperor standing naked on the beach with everyone ooohing and aahing about how fabulous his clothes were.

Demian Bichir really got into the soul of the character. He's the same actor who played Esteban on Weeds which was a completely dissimilar character. With this film, he undoubtedly proved that he can tap into the soul of other characters and transcend their essence on screen. In short, he's not a one-note actor like Clooney. He seriously blew me away in this film and some of my faith in the entertainment industry would be restored if he were to be honored w/ the best actor award.

But, alas.... I think the naked emperor will "win".

Yeah, his performance rang true, which is what I desire when watching films. Very tear-jerking.

Just watched A Better Life, and Demián Bichir was amazing! I had only seen him in Weeds, but he has got a fan for life. No offense to Jean Dujardin, but I do feel that Demián should have won the Oscar.

Wonder is the seed of knowledge.
