So, good but bad casting and a few clunky lines?

I think it's interesting that you can be 100% against illegal immigration but still enjoy a film for creating sympathetic human characters you can care about ... but I really wish they'd cast different people. Demián Bichir wasn't bad, really, just not 'street' enough. But José Julián was awful. He's too photogenic, and him and his friends trying to do the 'gangsta talk' were just terrible.

It appears the Academy Awards disagree with you.

Not "street" enough? Demian Bichir's character wasn't supposed to be "street". He was a hardworking man who illegally came to America to provide for his family...

Reminded me of my father who came to America from Ecuador (legally) to provide for his family. My dad was a hardworking man much like Carlos. That's probably why this film resonated so much with me.

Demian Bichir was perfectly cast. Hope he, at least, wins the SAG award (actors voting for actors)....

I think that was the point, they had them speak "gangsta talk" to illustrate how they weren't really gangsters, but more like wanna-bees. To show the audience how easy it is for someone in their situation to think that being a gangster or thug is the only way out, or that it's cool.

Yeah, but their (some of the kids') "acting" was awful.

Apart from the too photogenic bit I agree with you.
Just watching now and couldn't work out whether it was poor script or bad acting so came on here.
