What does Karl mean: 'on the estate...'

When Karl talks about when he was a kid, he talks about "on the estate..." What does it mean? In US, estate usually means large property with a huge house/mansion, but it looks like they were living in the city. Is British meaning of "estate" like an American way of saying "back in the old neighborhood?" Thanks.

I believe its a poor residential area's...not necessary "The Projects" like the US, but people who live on the estates were lower socioeconomically

I'm not sure if its subsidies housing...

There are only two ways you can injure your neck 1)a car accident 2) Cunnilingus

It is council estates which is subsidised public housing ie...Council House.

Things have changed since Karl was a kid though they were run by the Council in his day now they are mostly run by Housing Associations now which are private non profit making organisations.

You know, Wobbles... I'm kinda mad at you.
