Weird topic this week - Englishness

They really slagged us off - I can't help but wonder if they weren't pandering to the US audience slightly.

We're very self deprecating so we don't mind taking the piss out of ourselves and of course there is a kind of rivalry between the US and UK if IMDB is to be believed, which it isn't of course). Not sure where I'm going with this but I doubt they would slag off the US like that for 25 minutes!

not complaining, just observing, love the show!

How did they "slag us off".
Yes I am English.

If Jesus was a Jew, why does he has a Mexican first name?

reply

well it was all about how rubbish England is

Errr, no it was not. I just re-watched it, nothing about how "rubbish" England is.
Again, how did they "slag" us off?

If Jesus was a Jew, why does he has a Mexican first name?

I must admit it’s hard for me to quote without re-watching. Not that I’m averse to doing that, I just haven’t yet (hence my radio silence as it were).

What I can say is that it was just a feeling I got after watching it, I might have misinterpreted it and if so I’ll hold my hands up. I love the show, not knocking it, just that was my initial thought after I watched it.

This episode was taken from one of the "Guide To" podcasts that they did. I've always thought it was one of their weaker podcasts, particularly because it was a very odd choice of topic that I don't think lends itself that well to humor as much as the other topics. Ricky and Steve did a little too much of the talking in this episode, and I don't really think that they explained what it means to be English as much as they believed they did. While Karl's contributions were brilliant as always, they didn't really have anything to do with "Englishness", per se. My personal favorite was Karl's story about "Shorts Man", who liked wearing short shorts and liked to "accidentally" expose himself. However, this could have fit into any number of topics.

There are plenty of people from other nations that tend to dislike the US, while people from the US either:

A) are overly self-interested and don't care what others think,

B) are proud of the nation's heritage and are deeply offended by foreigners' narrow-mindedness, or

C) don't care because, in truth, every nation has a fair share of the good and bad.

There are plenty of people from the US that tend to like other nations, yet that is because either:

A) they are completely oblivious to the bad aspects of other countries such that they think the whole planet is a bright shining smiley face,

B) they want to experience some of the bad of other countries so the bad of the US will no longer look so bad and only make the good look that much better, or

C) they just want to get the hell out of the US because they know (for them, personally) that it sucks and anywhere else would be better.

That might be true to a point but you can hardly turn on the TV without somebody telling us how awful the US is. It's been done to death, we get it. The US is bad bad bad and the rest of us are great and would be better off without them. I'm British but grew up in the States (Michigan to be exact) and like somebody else said, all countries have their good and bad.

Are you trying to say Jesus Christ can't hit a curveball?
