Why are medical examiners processing weapons?

I haven't been a regular viewer, but there hasn't been a lot worth watching this summer and I've picked this show up again after a long time away. In the episode aired on 7/25, Dr. Isles and the gay Scottish M.E. Are shown processing a whole bunch of guns, trying to identify filed-down serial numbers and find other evidence.

No medical examiner for a major metropolitan police department would ever be tasked with processing weapons found at a crime scene. Does this show think so little of its viewers that it would attempt to pull this over on them, or are the writers and producers just idiots?

reply

Its called dramatic license.

reply

Because in a previous life Dr Isles was a member of the NCIS Major Crimes Response Team.

reply

LOL yes! She was NCIS agent Caitlin Todd in her past life, so she knows what she's doing 

"shown processing a whole bunch of guns"

No! Maura was shown giving a presentation about the guns while using the royal "we" ascribed to the processing done earlier. Whether "we" implies only her Medical Examiner's Office or the expansive Boston Police Department, is up to your inference.

reply

Sorry, hon, but a medical examiner would never presume to "present" someone else's work, much less have the weapons in her possession at any point. It was lazy storytelling, followed by even lazier apologetics from some people here.

reply

You could have argued these points with your OP. I would have moved on. But it seems you were as lazy as the storytellers.

I certainly wasn't apologizing for nor defending the 'lazy' storytellers. I was just pointing out your lazy argument.

I thought the same thing. I'm a big fan of NCIS and Dr Mallard and Abby do completely different jobs, where on R&I they have Maura doing the job of both.

reply

The Scottish M.E. is not gay...

Well in one episode, Jane picked up a bullet, looked at it with her naked eye and declared that it matched the one from the murder weapon...
