The Devil's in the detail
I’ve just seen Cafe De Flore for the second time (I missed the first 10 mins the first time i saw it in March this year) and noticed the following, which so far haven’t been commented on here.
• In the airport scene at the end, where Antoine walks through a group of down’s syndrome teenagers, several of them have circular tattoo’s, which in itself seems odd, and they appear to be shaped like the windows of the cathedral (Notre Dame?) that Jacqueline and Laurent visit which is also shown in the picture during the credits. I’m not sure if the tattoo’s were present when a similar shot is shown at the beginning? The wallpaper in Jacqueline’s flat also had a pattern like this. Shortly after this shot, I noticed Carol also had a similar tattoo, and the tip of a tattoo could be seem on Antoine’s back, which i don’t think it was there before - I’ve looked at the trailer and I can’t see it in the shots of him & Rose naked underwater. Rose of course had loads of tattoo’s, but as I wasn’t looking for this particular one then, I can’t say if any of them were similar or not.
• Michel de Nostre dame is the full name of mystic and seer Nostradamus.
• At the News Years party, Antoine's father says to Carol something along the lines of “every picture has a story to tell”, which could be read as supporting the view discussed in another thread that Carol made this all up as a coping mechanism.
• A life sized model Beefeater in a glass case in his living room can briefly seem in the background of one shot, and its refection appears in a glass door towards the end. This follows from Antoine seeing one at the disco where he met Rose and his voiceover about there always being a bottle of Beefeater gin in the background of family photo’s.
• Jean-Marc Vallée’s symbolism may even include the names of his cast. Kevin Parent plays Antoine who Carol believes was Jacqueline’s son in another life. Presumably there were no actors with the surname of child available
Make of this what you will.
