A Shame

This felt like a really bad script written by a first time writer who should be discouraged from continuing. I was shocked when I found out it was Amy Heckerling. The dialogue was eye roll inducing in its desperation to appeal to modern audiences. From frame one it felt like I was at a reading of a middle aged woman's attempt to write a marketable, youth oriented script. Like the kind of gal who joins a writer's workshop at age 50 because her marriage is over or the kids are in college and writing was always something that she "meant to do." Sometimes it's too late. What's truly upsetting about this is that Heckerling was a really cool director once upon a time but she just hasn't kept up with things.
That said, I don't think this script would have ever been really acceptable even in the 80's which is where the soul of this writer-director seems to obviously be.

Lol - so true

Yes. This film is horrific.

The strange thing is, isn't Amy Heckerling normally a good writer? Didn't she write Clueless and Fast Times? When I saw she had another movie with Alicia Silverstone, and with vampires no less, it seemed like a easy slam dunk but this movie was such a mess. There was no flow, stories were popping up all over the place. Not sure what happened here.

"Troubled childhood? If you consider a 9 year old kid with a 35 year old girlfriend troubled."

This movie isn't marketed to millenials, so the fact that it's not a "youth oriented" marketable scrip makes sense. It's basically gen-xers laughing.

reply

I laughed multiple times. It was a decent script IMO.
