Stuff I liked about the ending (spoiler alert)

The cult members run away, leaving the ending sufficiently ambiguous and imperfect.

Alex gets promoted and the corrupt officials take early retirement rather than continue to fight the bad fight.

Sheriff Wilkins’ dog finds a new human to love.

The motherless Mathis family members choose strength and kindness as their way forward.

Minister for ecological awareness. :-)

Peter gets his insurance money.

Yes, it’s Summer of Fear, but that’s okay because Mae is really good at it.

There is potentially room here for another season or a few more episodes.
I did find Mae a sympathetic character. I was far more sympathetic to her than I was to the rest of the family she was staying with ( with the major exception of the mother Suzanne, who seemingly adopted her as another daughter).
Too bad she wasn't with a more supportive and friendlier family.
Obviously the father didn't really like Mae at all and two of the daughters were resentful/jealous of her popularity.
Also the fact that she was better looking and easily more popular than both of them.
