How could he drink that puddle water at the end?

probably infested with parasites

That's what I didn't quite understand too. But if you're as dehydrated as he was you'll probably drink anything.

He had already drank his own pee at that point, I think some muddy water won't do him much harm.

reply

Pee is less harmful especially when it's yours.

The guy drank muddy water, which could've had poop of other animals mixed within - you could get harshly infected...

When you're in a situation like that. When you're dehydrated to the point of near death. It's ALWAYS smarter to drink contaminated water than it is to go without. Because the parasites in the water will take more time to kill you than the dehydration will. You're right in thinking drinking nasty water is stupid and a big no-no. You're correct. But this is the exception to the rule. Just watch a few episodes of Dual Survival. Cody will explain his logic when it comes to drinking water that may be contaminated. He refuses to drink dirty water. But then when he's dehydrated to the point of exhaustion. He breaks down and admits it's always smarter to drink the water and get yourself rescued. He goes through this exact scenario several times on the show. Check it out.

Hello, MitchellG,

I just spent half an hour copying the text about that puddle directly from Aron Ralston's book, and then my computer burped and all my typing was lost, wasted.

If you really are interested, and aren't just trolling, then I'll be happy to copy it for you again. If you don't reappear here, then I'll suppose that you were a troll.

However, if other folks are interested, of course I'll be happy to type what Aron wrote.

(Part of what he says is that the puddle's water was "brandy-sweet". And, NO, he wasn't worried about bacteria at that point.)

It's after 7 in the morning where I live, and I've been up all night and am exhausted, but I'll check back here later today, after a little sleep.

To repeat what I've written in other threads:

Yes, I own Ralston's book! I'll be happy to provide information to all of you!

(What I can't do is scan the color pictures of the real-life characters who saved Aron, and the gals he met - because I don't own a scanner, and I certainly don't own the rights to those photos. But I am always happy to provide information, for those who, for one reason or another, have not been able to get Aron's book.)

I'm a sleepy girl, but I promise to check back later. Best holiday wishes to all of you!

Fiona

And by the way, do you think that Danny Boyle would allow *James Franco* to drink impure water?

They can make good water look like whatever they want it to look like. I love you for worrying about Franco, but that was probably very good water, flavored with stuff to make it look "yucky". It might have had chocolate mixed in there, for all we know.

(And I always laugh when Franco burps.)

Cheers, mate, this was a very good question to ask. Happy Holidays, and I wish you a very great New Year in 2013!

I'd rather drink dirty water and get parasites which most of the time can be easily treated than die because of hydration after I spent 5 day trapped under a rock and cut of my own arm. Wouldn't you agree?

That puddle of water was no different than a bottle of ice cold water and a giant cheese burger to Aron at that time I bet. A lot of other people do the same thing when faced with similar incidents.

Joe Simpson, a man who had to climb out of a huge crevasse with a shattered right light. Then drag himself 3 miles to base camp. He drank things that made him puke but drank it right back up, he didn't care.

reply

The doctors will pump and lovage UR stomach out and give u anti parasite drugs in addition to arm surgery. But that water had a dead animal in it.

reply

More importantly, how did he not puke after gulping what appeared to be a few bottles full? He had not had anything to drink for quite some time and the body can't just drink that much all at once without rejecting it.

Hilariously first-world comment.
