I didnt figure it out until towards the end, but I knew it'd turn out to be the old lady. It's dumb because it was the old guy chasing the kid in the beginning! The boy falling appeared to be an accident, so why banish the girl, kill Charisse, and go after the entire family?
Take away the plot twist and you have a good movie.

Caresse didn't die. She was hit over the head with a shovel and stuffed into the trunk of her car.
The mother said she was afraid she would go to jail because of her son's accidental death. Still not really much of a reason to go to such great lengths to cover up a death that was clearly an accident, but that just goes to show that for some people it doesn't take much for them to go off the deep end and turn completely psycho.
