Decent Movie With A Few Great Scenes *Spoilers

Overall I was disappointed with the movie. Too many stupid jump-scares, and the atmosphere just wasn't there for most of the film.

That being said, there were some specific scenes that really stood out to me.

When Ashley snapped the wooden doll in half, and Tali snapped as well. I was genuinely surprised. Maybe that scene would have been more at home in a film that was not Blair Witch, but I still appreciated it.

Secondly, toward the end when Lisa was crawling through the little underground hole and got stuck. I was squirming in my seat the whole time. It was a really effective scene.

I actually really enjoyed the whole last 30 minutes or so. When it wasn't failing to be subtle, it worked pretty well.

One thing that confused me, did anything ever really come from the cut on Ashley's foot? She pulled that thing out and then that's it. Not sure what the point of all that was.

I think we are supposed to believe that Ashley was literally infected by the forest, or that she was turning into a stick doll.

reply

They really didn't go too far with either of those ideas.

reply

not at all, in fact they had her fall OUT of a tree, they totes could have had her get stuck to it. lol but it wouldn't have been scary. quite honestly the movie really wasn't scary, but I still liked it. The director put so much stock in the jump scares, he even was blowing a fog horn at the actors to make them legitimately scared. I'm not trying to be a negative nancy, but if they really couldn't just pretend, how bad were these actors to begin with?

reply

Yeah, I just think this isn't the kind of movie that the director excels at. You're Next is one of my favorite spooks from the last 10 years, but that's a movie that has charm, and action, and really isn't that scary.

I just don't think Wingard knows what and how much to hold back in order to tap into what the first film did.

reply

She was turning into that spider thing. I'm telling you!

reply

Wait, what spider thing? See that would have scared me in a very personal way if there were any spiders what-so-ever in the film. how the kids didn't just accidentally run into a random spider web out in the woods is beyond me.

reply

He means the monster with long Spider-like legs, I think.

reply

They mean the wonky witch thing that was chasing them.

It feels like they cut one or two scenes that would have given some meaning to the infection. Mind you, the actress was already wooden enough already.

reply

lmao...yeah. The writer said he cut some scenes that would have given more explanation, on what? I don't know. He didn't say, but he said he did it for creative purposes. -_- it would have helped imo.

reply

I mean, that's not too far out there compared to the idea that she's becoming a tree.

reply

Agree on most of what you said. That last half hour really saved the movie from being *beep* in my opinion.
