Book of Shadows vs Blair Witch

Which of the two Blair Witch Projects do you all prefer?

Book of Shadows definitely has more straight-up badly done scenes, but also is way more creative and full of ideas.

I've always liked Blair Witch 2 and I don't get why it's so hated. I like that it's different from the first film and explores new territory. It's not scary but it's interesting and the acting was really good.

Blair Witch on the other hand just let me down. Anything good about it was done better in the first film, the rest was just crap. It's a shame because I'm a big fan of Adam Wingard's work.

Some of the acting in Book of Shadows is…less than good we shall say.

I saw Book of Shadows about 5 years after the first film so by then any particular expectations I would have had already died down and I could watch the film on more of an even keel. I enjoyed the film and still do. On the one hand, it has a real early 2000s flavour to it and I don't mean that in any good way. I mean it tries a bit too hard to be hip with the characters involved like the goth and the wiccan. They're like a sort of MTV Scooby Doo gang. But on the other hand, I can't say that wasn't deliberate and a sort of satire because *of course* the goth and the wiccan would buy into some Blair Witch road trip.

What I really liked about the film, though, was that it was as much about the public reaction to the first one as anything while leaving some tantalizing ambiguity. It was a real departure in tone and style as well. You knew right away that this wasn't going to be a low budget shaky-cam attempt to capture lightning in a bottle a second time.

The first film faced a backlash partly because you didn't see anything. The second film also shows no witch and also is a very Hollywood type film so I think it was hated on by both sides.

It did feature Kim Director, though.

Some of it was cheesy as hell. It was still a decent movie overall though. The only character I didn't care for was Erica. The whole "Poor, poor wiccans" routine wore thin very quickly. However, she is an absolute doll so bless her heart for getting nude!

the acting was really good.

(Spoilers) Yeah, I agree with person above me in that I always kind of liked Book of Shadows. I couldn't even compare it the TBWP original so that made it unique. Blair Witch 2016 can be easily compared to original witch (pun intended) will be its downfall. Without comparing Blair Witch to its predecessor(s) I liked it. I didn't like the characters as much as the original. I think he first movie was more intimate. I found the use of loud noise to be very effective, esp in the cinema, and the torch light looking at the forest was scarier for me than any of the jump scares. There's a scene where the witch is running toward Lisa outside the house and that was freaky. Acting was good enough. Good job!

Can't believe I'm gonna say this... but I think Book Of Shadows is the better film. It's original, it's not a rehash, it didn't take the easy route, Jeffrey Donovan and Kim Director are more likeable than anyone in Blair Witch, the soundtrack is awesome etc. For a complete rushjob with studio paw-prints all over it, it's still a more unique film than 2016. I like 2016 a lot but it's the basic run around the woods sequel the world expected back 2000. The director even refered to it as "an amusement park ride".

I'm gonna have to watch them back to back. I loved Book Of Shadows but I haven't seen it in a while.

I think Book of Shadows is a better sequel. It's a different take and what's more it answers some questions about TBWP.

BW2016 on the other hand doesn't answer anything and just introduces more questions. It felt very unsatisfying. Even the witch is apparently not the witch, so who was the woman in the mirror in the original thing or the other thing or the elongated arm-thingy? What's with the worms?

It just retcons a bunch of stuff, sticks in some mythology and goes off running. It's like a separate film they decided to make a BW sequel halfway through.

Book of Shadows. I always liked it even if was kinda cheesy. But some ideas and scenes were cool and efective (like the supermarket sequence).
It was wayy better than this pathetic attempt to a sequel/remake.

Both films had their moments. Blair Witch probably had the most memorable ones, but Book of Shadows was more interesting and actually had an original story.

Book of Shadows is criminally underrated. Glad to see it finally getting some love on here.

I like 2016 well enough but it felt like a remake masquerading as a sequel. Also felt like the writers had a load of ideas and decided to shoe horn them all in instead of filtering out the poorer ideas and concentrating on the better ones.

Didn't particularly care for the new Blair Witch... but I'd take it hands down over Book of Shadows.
