I saw Book of Shadows about 5 years after the first film so by then any particular expectations I would have had already died down and I could watch the film on more of an even keel. I enjoyed the film and still do. On the one hand, it has a real early 2000s flavour to it and I don't mean that in any good way. I mean it tries a bit too hard to be hip with the characters involved like the goth and the wiccan. They're like a sort of MTV Scooby Doo gang. But on the other hand, I can't say that wasn't deliberate and a sort of satire because *of course* the goth and the wiccan would buy into some Blair Witch road trip.
What I really liked about the film, though, was that it was as much about the public reaction to the first one as anything while leaving some tantalizing ambiguity. It was a real departure in tone and style as well. You knew right away that this wasn't going to be a low budget shaky-cam attempt to capture lightning in a bottle a second time.
The first film faced a backlash partly because you didn't see anything. The second film also shows no witch and also is a very Hollywood type film so I think it was hated on by both sides.
It did feature Kim Director, though.
