My family loved it...why so much hate

I saw this with my dad, my two sisters and a friend and it was the most fun experience ever. My sister was so scared she started crying,, and from what I could see the whole theatre was in a similar state to her. Sure the movie had flaws but it's a horror film. The main goal is to scare you, and the fact that it made me hesitant to close my eyes last night means it's done its job. And I watch horror movies every second night, I'm very conditioned to scares and horro but it still had me jumping at some points, it was different to the first one, yeah, but what did you want? A shot for shot remake? No, people just hate it because it's new and they're trying to be cool by following the new trend of hating everything. Some people did genuinely dislike it for various other reasons, but a majority of people just don't like it because they're following the crowd. All that aside though, I give it an 8. Great cinema experience,

To each their own, I think the movie has some good parts, but overall is lackluster.

I'll go over breifly what I didn't like as I've gone into detail in various threads on the board.

Plot, and characters a sloppily written. The tape Lane finds, that is the entire motivation for the film, is a bootstrap paradox and can not exist as it has no point of origin. The film presents itself as found footage, but takes no efforts to make it feel authentic, over-use of jump scares, the film drops any ambiguity for LOUD NOISES which deflates any tension for a given scene, the film also breaks the established mythos of the Blair Witch, and overall is just not scary.

At the end of the day it's just a piece of entertainment though and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I agree with OP that honestly, scary movies are called scary movies for a reason, they're meant to scare you, not be these insanely well-written oscar-worthy performances. And honestly all of the horror movies that have gotten good reviews this year (with the exception of Don't Breathe) didn't scare me. If a horror movie doesn't scare you then what's the point? I thought that the characters were expanded upon as much as they needed to be because in the end, how relatable they are isn't what the movie is about. The main girl was a great actor and she convinced me that she was REALLY terrified of things that were REALLY happening in the woods. I felt like the loud noises actually put me MORE on edge because it's like "that could happen at any point in time oh my god" and "oh *beep* they're gonna die". I thought it was clever of the writer/director to go in a more intense direction with this one than the original, because it made it more engaging and also made it scarier (not saying I didn't like the original, I LOVE it). Overall I thought it was actually a LOT better than critics said it was and it terrified me as well as my family (my mom, my dad, my grandma and I) and our theater which is what horror movies should do.

Because life expands further than your family.
