Ironically appropriate: the absolute nadir of found footage films...
Don't deny it - if you were around for the original Blair Witch Project and saw it in the theaters, you likely were scared and still recall, for better or worse, many elements of the film all these years later. Also for better or worse, the original BWP was pretty much the originator of the modern found footage horror film genre. And of course, it had one of the most effective viral marketing campaigns ever devised, certainly well ahead of its time.
17 years and countless found footage horror films later [with thankfully some very top quality examples], we now get the dreck which dares to carry the name of the original film.
Bland, uninspired, unlikeable, throw-away characters, insipid plot - there are many ways to describe this utterly disappointing film and none of them are positive.
One of the things that impressed me the most about the original BWP was the sense of dread that permeated the bulk of the film. Along with the more intimate, more realistically believable dynamics of a trio, BWP managed to suck me in to the eerie world it created.
I tried to watch this one with an open mind. I really did. But this film is such a mediocre offering that they may as well not have even bothered to make it.
A very generous 4 from me only for a frenetic-paced yet pointless and unchilling final 15 minutes.
The original BWP and this one truly bookend the entire found footage horror genre phenomenon. A shame this one fails to measure up so completely.
cheers...
