Witch should have been Heather

Instead of something out of a Silent Hill movie. And the film could have ended with Heather transferring the evil spirit possessing her to her baby brother. Now, that would have been an ending.

There is a theory that the "creature" in the movie is Heather. She was tortured and is now the servant of the witch, who doesn't have a physical form and is an evil force that is the controls the woods.

If so, then Wingard and Barrett have no idea how to tell a story. Not surprising. The whole dramatic thrust of the story is James looking for his sister. If Wingard meant the creature to in fact be Heather, it would have been much more powerful dramatically to make that point explicit and not just imply it. James learning that Heather has become the Witch would have been devastating and an unforgettable ending.

You're right about them not knowing how to tell a story. just listen to the commentary track and you'll hear how they had many different ideas for how to tell the story. they re shot many things and would stop filming things a certain way to shoot things differently. they even point out shots where they realize they could have done a better job establishing things. they got rid of a lot of footage because the movie seemed to be going a comedic way. the movie originally started off looking differently too.

they even acknowledge that they never intended to reveal any answers and that the blair witch is not in the film. they also mention that there will be no more sequels and therefore everything people are questioning will never be answered. such as the lights that shine through the house. what the creature was, which according to them is not cgi. they jokingly blame the movie goers for not seeing the movie or tearing it apart for the reason we will never get any more sequels and answers.

they point out things that no one seems to realize such as the tree roots that girl pulls out of her legs. many seem to think it's a centipede which it's not. the fact that they're just running around the same spot over and over, the broken tree, and many don't realize it.

there are also some hidden things within the house such as an 8mm camera that a few people have spotted as well as the map that gets lost in the first film but no one seems to have found that one yet. the girl that is seen running through the house is not heather, it's just referred to as a ghost.

This idea wouldn't work very well unless they could get Heather's actress back, which they couldn't.

I don't think shes even in the business anymore. Last I heard anything about her was from an article in High Times lol. She moved to Northern California and started growing pot.

Agreed. That would've been something to really get under your skin.
Instead, the ending is so vague that any conclusion you come to as a viewer feels like a wild shot in the dark. Wingard & Barrett said many times that they view the film simply as a "ride" or "Blair Witch: the VR Experience". Story was not a huge concern. And watching the film you can tell they just wanted to do a story of people getting chased in the woods by a creature.
I think they kept things vague at the end to avoid certain scrutiny (e.g. saying the creature isn't the Blair Witch stops them from admitting that their take on the witch was pretty uninspired) and simply cause they just don't care that much about the who & what.
