No, it wasn't that bad. I think it just focuses more on scares than character development. The subplot with James and Heather should've been strengthened. It should've shown how much his family was effected by the events of 1994. In addition to losing their daughter they'd have to deal with scrutiny from the media and the public which would seriously take a toll on people. They'd never be the same again. So I think they should've elaborated on that angle a little more to give James a stronger motivation for going into the woods.

The first one was mostly about the characters, how they turned against each other, and how they dealt with their sense of hopelessness as they realized they'd never leave the woods. This one didn't seem to have that as much so I felt it was lacking. Other than that, I have no problem with this movie and think it makes for a good entry to the series.
