So at the end, James and the girl both know "don't look at the witch." Stare at the corner, keep your eyes closed...any of that would have worked. But no, they both decided to look. Got what they deserved.
That's not the case with the other victims, who were just out in the woods and didn't look at any witch and got killed anyway.

One of them just decided to climb a huge tree to get a drone that had no significance to her current situation at all.

But then she heard James speak to her, so she turned toward his voice, relieved to think he was still alive after all. She was tricked (just as James was; IIRC, he turned around because he thought he heard Heather's voice).

Complaining about stupid characters in a horror movie is like complaining about blood and violence and death and screaming in a horror movie. The two are mutually exclusive.
