I really enjoyed 'Blair Witch', as a huge fan of the original, I thought it was respectful of the mythology and continued the story in a modern setting (using GPS, multiple cameras, etc and using lsocial media for the curse/witch to manifest).
I'm curious if there was another film, this would be creating a perfect trilogy by ignoring 'Book Of Shadows' (that film is an insult to the original filmmakers and the audience), so would it be a prequel revolving around Elly Kedward and/or Rustin Parr / I believe this would bring the trilogy full circle or a straight sequel to 'Blair Witch' (2016). My dream would be to own a 'Blair Witch Trilogy' Boxset.
The budget of 'Blair Witch' was $5Mil, domestically it's made over $20Mil and world wide it's made over $45Mil. After that you've got DVD and Blu Ray sales...
I'm not sure what defines 'underperforming' at the Box Office.
But, if you take into consideration that the original 'Blair Witch Project' was the most talked about film of 1999, it also had a widespread marketing campaign (Missing Posters of the 3 filmmakers who had dissapeard, the website / which on its own had become iconic; the mythology of the Blair Witch, photos, recovered evidence, updates of unsuccessful attempts to find the missing students, audio files, etc, newspaper and magazine articles, the list goes on and on).
Apparently the marketing for 'Blair Witch' was around $20,000. I honestly did not know about it until a trailer popped up on Facebook.
So, did the secretive nature of the new film actually sabotage its own success?
I think this will be one of those films (due to the nature of DVD, Blu Ray, word of mouth) that later gain a cult following but may not do that well at the box office.
In Australia this film has also had a very limited theatrical release (I had to see the one only screening at an independent cinema ('The Astor Theatre') because no one else was showing it).
I think only the hardcore fans knew about it. Which is a shame; why not try to attract a wider audience???
"So, did the secretive nature of the new film actually sabotage its own success? " Quite possibly, yes. In fact, almost certainly. However, there will definitely be another sequel. BW2016 is the start of a series of sequels it has been said, and the popularity of the new movie is gaining more and more momentum. So yeah it's a slow burner but the public are now starting to really hear about this, and how good it is.

The exact opposite for me. I read the marketing budget was 20 million (however I don't believe that number, my guess would be 5 million maybe). Here in Canada there was a T.V. spot everytime something went to commercials for about a month prior to the movie.

What're you talking about.. .the budget was 5 mil and it made 20+ mil at the box office alone... More than tripled the budget. And that' snot including Downloads and disc sales and rentals.... There's nothing ridiculous with more than tripling a return. That's considered doing VERY WELL.
I found this to be a true sequel to the BWP, but that in no way made it good. The BWP made that whole MTV, shaky camera, no more than 3 inches from your face, phenomenon a thing, and this follows that suit. The movie was crap though (to try to watch) even if it was indeed a sequel. Say what you will about The Book of Shadows, it had a cast that made you want to pay attention, even if it just played on the Blair Witch for money. 3/10
There's a 45 minute "documentary", Curse of the Blair Witch also made in 1999, by the same people, shown on TV only. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0202493/ "This mockumentary was produced for airing on The Sci-Fi Channel as a promotional prelude to the release of The Blair Witch Project (1999)."
