Salaries
An interesting comparison. For this movie the salaries for
Tom Hanks: $15,000,000
Barkhad Abdi: $65,000

So?
Hanks is an A-list star commanding top dollar.
Abdi was a literal nobody in his very first film ever.
So what's your point?

Don't take it personally. As I said, its an interesting comparison considering Hanks is main protagonist and Abdi is the main antagonist in a big studio movie.
nobody lives forever...
Main antagonist or not, he is still a first timer in his first film. The comparison between his pay and one of the biggest A list stars on the planet is not interesting at all. It is to be expected.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Boy, you are taking this personally.
He also makes it to the lowest paid list on this website. Here's the link:

No I am not taking it personally. I am simply responding to your post.
Your post seems to imply there is something wrong with the salaries, that they should be more equal somehow and that there is something wrong as to why they are not.
There isn't.
The idea that I am taking it personally, is your own false delusion as to my disposition.

Welcome to the world of CG. You really can't interact with him. He freaks out about everything, has absolutely no sense of humor and is nothing more than a contrarian. He's a troll, you'd be best to just put him on ignore.

You just couldn't not respond could you?
Run along, you must have some post to freak out over and to explode into some cussing frenzy. I mean, at least you have good judgment when to and when not to lose it (sarcasm), the threads you freak out over (80% of them) are SOOO important.
Hilarious? I wouldn't use that word. One must be able to recognize humor and possess the ability to apply and or understand humor to properly use the word. Those self important hot heads (you) with no sense of humor should stay clear of such usages.

I mean seriously "an interesting comparison", that was enough to anger you and get a foul response? "What's your point", well, he said "an interesting comparison". The point was in the OP. It was a neutral statement, not positive or negative, not good or bad. You applied the negative meaning all on your own and went on one of your typical internet message board rants. It's really no big deal, everyone has one from time to time. You just seem to have them ALLL the time. You're so predicable it's sad. I can read a thread and see the list of responses and then see the little sailor head icon in the responses and 9 times out of 10 I know what the response will be. You going berserk and acting like a psycho path and going off on some tangent. You go off about the stupidest stuff too. Like this thread. Your complaint isn't even justified, you're the one making it negative. Half of your complaints (which you constantly do) aren't that bad if you didn't act like such a pretentious, self righteous ass.

Another low salary that was not on the list:
Jon Heder was paid $1,000 for starring in "Napoleon Dynamite."
It was interesting to me. And do you tell me if there is something or nothing to see or if I shouold or should not move along. You take this arrogant attitude with your little hat.
shareSo Abdi is probably making triple the pay he did before working on his first movie ever, and Hanks pay is probably not much higher or lower than he's been making for a decade or more. If Abdi had been in major Hollywood productions for 30 years and still making fairly meager amounts, then I'd find it more interesting.
sharehe is lucky to gt 65k. folks would like to do free if you get a break in big time holly-wood. robert downey junior was paid how much for iron-man 1? And look how much he is making today. he needed that movie to get his career back on track!
this boy got a great break now he can cash inn. And plenty of hours will come.
the acting was good but there was only so much his role allowed!
Selling your skills is the same as any other business. There can be a minimum price attached to it to get a foothold. But, working for free has the undesired effect of bargaining from a position of weakness for your next opportunity.
nobody lives forever...
--in somalia, that is lot of money!
-- he was given the role more for authenticity rather than lack of talent available locally( they could have hired a somalian immigrant who could act in usa. and there are plenty: euthopian, kenyan etc)
--he is a virtual unknown.
--the exposure is worth more than the money for starters( just like lot of superstars do james bond movies for just a presence).
But he can reap rewards later. IF you are good more will always come.
when folks joined google, facebook etc, they worked for next to nothing and within 5 years they laughed all the way to the bank. I tried that too but we ended up on the other side of the coin!
Abdi lived in Somalia and Yemen before immigrating to the US in 1999, when he was 14.

You are dreaming man. How many mainstream roles do you think there are for Somalian accented actors in Hollywood. Check out the link below;
nobody lives forever...
oh, you solved the problem for me. so they did hire a US immigrant after all. i thought they went to somalia and hired an actor there.
well, he will do lot of black roles and not necessarily somalian or pure african roles. so he will cash in future. opportunities galore not just in movies but these days money is in serial-tv.
so that exposure was worth weight in gold.
it is holly-wood, they know exactly what they are doing. once you get a break there if you are good, you will definitely make it-it is tough and chances are incredibly limited. But if you are good and got exposure, you will make it count.
considering the stakes, salary should not be the concern here.
he is young and got world wide exposure.so more chances to come.
He is not African American in the conventional sense as in not born there. He's a migrant with a thick Somalian accent.
How many mainstream roles do you think there are for Somalian accented actors in Hollywood or TV for that matter?

Interesting, but you have to keep in mind how Hollywood works. It isnt an hourly job at the grocery store where you work 6 hours and get paid the same as the next minimum-wage employee. I think that they gave equally commendable performances, but that doesnt necessarily mean that they will get the same wage.
If they want Tom Hanks in the movie they have to put down big money. He can make 65,000 doing a cheesy cameo in a big movie and doesnt need to put in a lot of effort into something like this if it isnt worth the time and money.
Abdi on the other hand is a no name actor trying to make it in the industry. This is his first credit listed in IMDB. He doesnt have the pull to try negotiating a $15M payout for this movie. If he tried to do that, the studio would replace him with any of the thousands of hopeful actors willing to do a movie with Tom Hanks just for the resume.
Also, having big name actors draws crowds. Plenty of people saw this movie just because Tom Hanks was in it and they like his acting. No one except Abdi's mom is going to see this movie just because of him. Maybe if he transitions from this to other good movies and roles that will happen, but not on his first one.
Everyone has to start somewhere and for Barkhad Abdi it was Captain Phillips. Fear not, the guy is not short of a dollar.
http://networthtomb.com/barkhad-abdi-net-worth-endorsement-actor/ BTW, if you haven't seen it, do yourself a favour and see the terrific Eye in the Sky, where Abdi almost achieves the impossible, stealing the show from an excellent Helen Mirran and (RIP) Alan Rickman.🐭
I totally agree with the OP, Barkhad Abdi didn't deserve his fat paycheck of $65,000
share65k for 2-3 months work seems like a great deal... wish I was making 30k x month at my job.
