Very good

There was some pretty dodgy fake facial hair and it had the usual feel of a BBC4 drama - i.e. very well done, but the low budget was fairly apparent. But, Mark Gatiss and Rory Kinnear were very likeable, the set-up and conclusion with Bedford as an old man in 1969 were much better done than that sort of thing often is and, generally, is was very enjoyable.

Yes, thoroughly enjoyable. Setting it in 1969 worked nicely and it was all very silly and very good fun.

I was a little dissapointed. I was a huge fan of the 1950's version with Lionel Jeffries (i was pleased to see this version dedicated to him) and although I believe that they tried their best given the budget, it just seemed to lack something that I couldn't quite put my finger on. This said, I applaud any attempt to update these fantastic stories provided they are done with a degree of passion and imagination, and they certainly did that. I'm a big fan of Gatiss and the league of gentleman, and I'm also enjoying his history of horror which concludes next week.

I consider it unfair to enter a battle of wits when my opponent is so inadequately armed.

reply

Yes - if he wasn't obviously such a lovely bloke, Mr Gatiss' multiple talents could be very annoying... A very good actor and writer, as well as a likeable and engaging presenter and interviewer.

I loved the dialogue; It was absolutely HG Wells, especially the woman at the pub:)

Wasn't fond of the new ending though. Although it explains the scientific inaccuracies (well, a little bit!) I don't like the idea of the Selenites suddenly deciding to pre-emptively invade the Earth and Cavor's subsequent actions. It did work, I'll give it that, I just didn't like it.

Also it was a shame someone couldn't give 'em a bit more cash so they could show us more of Wells described of the interior of the Moon. You didn't really get the feeling that there was an actual civilization there.

reply

Likeable and charming, but unfortunately by times it looked like the Blue Peter crew papier-machéd the moon setting. Nice cameos though in the Méliès sequence.

I agree, a very good adaptation, I prefer it to the 60's version even, it's far more faithful to the novel.
