I am pretty sure it's more of a hippie cult. As I see it, the various "monsters", Elena being imprisoned, ... were Barry's work after Arboria lost control due to his addiction. I guess Arboria had originally only good intentions, that went horribly wrong.

I will now end this debate with you.

Bit of a mix really. One side you do have drug abuse violence and hallucinatory psychosis themes but on the other there were definitely flares of totalitarianism and megalomania so it's tough to say. Although I would say it's a series of homages to various exploitation genres.

The schlock horror elements were a bit forced though.
