Yes, it does not make sense that a POS like Ruthven would be offered such a gift. Especially since the other guy was there when he took Clara to the whorehouse. Ruthven had no redeeming qualities, and again, he was not worthy of immortal life.

I disagree. Ruthven is a born survivor, which is necessary for a vampire. And the other members of the Brotherhood aren't exactly paragons of virtue! They appear to be vicious killers.
