Wow, surprisingly good vampire film
... although it felt like it was trying to set up more films or a TV spinoff.

Right. A show that is NOT like Vampire Diaries.....
shareWell, that would depend on the writers, and the direction they chose to take. VD could have been a really good show, if it had have had different writers. I've been burned by a lot of shows of late with writers taking bad directions. IMHO.

VD had imho a pretty good start, but by the end of season one i
was realy disappointed.
Yeah. I really wish I had of quit watching during season one. I hang in there expecting it to get better and it never does. I do that with a lot of shows, and I'm starting to realize that I should just stop hoping and wishing and cut the cord the moment I'm bored.

I know that feeling. I watched VD for two more full seasons
and than finaly lost interest completly.
Personaly i found the vampire show moonlight way better. But
that show only lasted one season and was canceled.
Why do the good shows always get canceled faster than the so-so shows? It boggles the mind.

Well, not realy. Its rather simple. As a rule of thumb one
can say that mass compatibility excludes quality. Of course
there is now and then a exception, but they are rare.
As long as $$ rules the hunt for the lowest common denominator
to reach the largest possible viewership is on. Its just out
of economic necessitiy for chanels which finance themselves
mainly through advertisements. A show that is good but doesnt
reach the goal in numbers gets binned. As simple as that.
Additional with the growing concentration of media into fewer
hands the diversity gets reduced because just a handfull ppl
make the decisions.
Pay-tv is still a bit different. And guess what ? They are able
to deliver better quality.
Just my 2 cents.
Yes, of course. It always comes down to money. More coming in than going out. And I get that. It's bad business to let things fall into the red zone.

@India_Ana, knowing you like vampire movies, a recommendation in case you haven't encountered it yet: A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.

It's really outstanding, and very unusual.
Oooh. The trailer looks like fun. Thanks.

I wonder if there is an English dubbed version. I really hate to read movies. I miss out on the action and facial expressions when I have to read the subtitles.

All I can say is that my Region B (for UK market) BluRay has no language options - Farsi dialogue and English subtitles only. That's it. I should imagine that's going to be the same for all English Language markets. I shouldn't be too concerned though. The dialogue in this is sparse - some people are describing it as "minimalist dialogue", with occasional stretches of minutes at a time of no speech at all. Much of the story you read from the actors' body language and facial expressions.
If you happen to like it, some people are comparing it to Only Lovers Left Alive:

If you haven't seen that either, I can recommend it.
Oooh. Another interesting one. Thanks.

I was quite surprised by this film. I had delayed watching it because it wasn't especially well received and I only like about half of Neil Jordan's films.
But it really was quite good. Definitely glad I got around to seeing it.
I think a few scenes at the end could have been better. I wish they had handled the sword from Byzantium differently. That was such a cool plot-point, but the prop itself was silly looking and perhaps it could have been introduced earlier.
