No, it actually was moving away at one point. But it elastic banded back to the earth (or the earth got pulled to it). When Claire was printing off that paper, it read "The dance of death". That's what happened, the dance of death happened.

Yes, it shot by us. One thing this movie neglects is that on that first pass it would have completely wrecked the Earth through tidal force. Even if that somehow didn't happen, it would more than likely have flung us into a new and horrible orbit that would kill everything on the planet anyway, through heat or cold.
