Source in an Anthony Burgess novel?
I finally read THE END OF THE WORLD NEWS, published in 1983. One of the three interwoven storylines is about the unexpected appearance of a previously unknown planet that ultimately destroys the Earth in a devastating collision. The parallels with von Trier's scenario are striking on the larger scale, though details of personal stories are entirely different. The planet (named Lynx) moves into a near earth orbit, producing super high tides and earthquakes, and seizing the Moon into its own gravitational pull. Lynx and the Moon move way from Earth--then come back. The second encounter ups the magnitude of seismic and tidal calamities and the end comes when the Earth is torn apart and the debris reconstituted as a ring of dust around the intruder.
