This film is about how people cope with death

That's one of the reasons why I loved it so much. It's really a film about mortality and and death, something that we all are going to face, that one day we will all disappear forever. I thought that the planet served as a wonderful symbol for impending death. The way Claire responded to death was really heartbreaking because I imagine that's how it would be for me, absolutely frightening. She was so helpless at the end. I also thought it was interesting to contrast Claire's sadness with of Justine's stoicism in the brink of death for many often try to face death stoically. I also appreciate that this film takes place in a godless universe where everything is random and fundamentally meaningless to the grand scheme of things. The film was a work of poetry for me, a very cathartic experience.

I agree completely.

I absolutely agree. I think Von Trier thinks a lot about death and while writing this film he was interviewed for a biography a Danish journalist wrote about him. In that book he talks about wanting to go out like Justine-in a way accepting, submissive and without fear. Like his biggest wish that the final 5 minutes of his life would be without fear and meeting death head on. I think Claires reaction represents his fear about how he will really react.

I'm scared of the middle place between light and nowhere
