Lars Von Trier inspired by paintings

Would anyone know what paintings he seems to be inspired by?, I remember years ago These traditional paintings might've been 17th,18th century and they would portrayed woman clothed by rivers . They're quite colourful lots of greens and blues was looking to buy a print if I could remember who was the artist.

I just found out it's john everett millais' ophelia it looks great.

Based on the movie cover alone I'd assume he was inspired by Ophelia by John Everett Millais.

In the film Justine alters Claire/John's choice of pictures of paintings in the books displayed in their study. The paintings were abstracts (like Miro, Kandinsky, Braques) and Justine alters them for more romantic paintings that portray the human condition. Brueghel the younger was her first choice. Second choice was pre-Raphaelite Millais's Ophelia drowning. Didn't recognise the third. Fourth was Caravaggio. Fifth was a line drawing of a stag howling.

I'm scared of the middle place between light and nowhere

Thanks for the info. I only recognised the Brueghel and the Millais, but your explanation was spot on.

...it's just another dumb film, get over it.
