Way to give me an anxiety attack

The very idea of another planet crashing into ours is scary enough, the way this was told in the second half was honestly one of the creepiest stories I've ever seen. I don't care about all the psychological mumbo jumbo, I watched it for the space stuff.

Surely the likelihood of this even coming close to happening is infinitesimal?

More like near certain (maybe not a runaway planet, but some similar cataclysmic collision). There have been plenty of close calls in the past. It's only a matter of time before something big enough to do the job hits us. But it's statistically unlikely to happen in our lifetime.

Ok. Just so you know, it was all very non-scientific. You should look at the 'Goofs' section to read about all the ways a collision like they show in the movie is not possible. Spoiler: Everybody would already be dead before the actual collision.

And hasn't this already happened to earth and that is where the moon came from? The debris from the collision orbited earth and formed the moon?

reply

It'll never happen this way. There is no planet we can't see. Even if we can't see it from Earth, the many space probes we've sent out over the years would see anything "behind the sun"

But if you want something to keep you up at night, keep in mind the universe could cease to exist at any second. The Higgs Boson could shift in field and cause the universe to basically cease to exist as we know it.
