Dogville and Antichrist are from the same guy (Lars von Trier) as this movie (Melancholia). Personally I thought I recognized the style, but when I saw Charlotte Gainsbourg is when it clicked that it was from the same guy as Antichrist. Both movies equally slow. Poetic as well, and visually compelling, but as beautiful as it may be, it can get boring. He does pick great actors tho.

Such a thoughtful reply, I feel honored to have been graced by your masterful insight and meaningful opinion.

P.S: In case your intelligence was not up to par, I was being sarcastic.

I just find these to be such compelling films, and unique experiences. I demand an explanation.

reply

Allow me to quote film critics more learned than I to illustrate my point:

Dogville - What Lars von Trier has achieved is avant-gardism for idiots. (David Denby)

Eyes Wide Shut - I kept my eyes open all through Eyes Wide Shut and saw more control-freak unreality than visual genius around the edges of the cluttered compositions. (Andrew Sarris)

Mulholland Dr - An extended mood opera, if you want to put arty label on incoherence. (Desson Thomson)

They are all in the minority

reply

But I respect your opinions as well as theirs.

reply

When you say Funny Games US is it because you haven't seen the original or because you thought the original wasn't boring? The latter I don't get because they are the same movie (maybe you prefer one but in terms of pacing and time, they are the same so why boring?)

reply

I've seen both films and I believe they are equally tedious.

I put the remake in my previous post because I think remaking a boring film into another boring film is obtuse and deserved a mention.

Got it. Agree to disagree then.

reply

Um, which of my points did you disagree exactly? That the original is boring? That the remake is boring? That both films are boring?

I find movies like Transformers and Fast & Furious boring. Melancholia is wonderful, and if you're an easily bored philistine who doesn't care about art, then why would you watch a Von Trier movie.

reply

I am not a philistine and appreciate art so damn much. These are just the movies that don't work for me.

reply

Whoa, The Untouchables was boring? This is a first.

reply

Even the most acclaimed movies receive hates. Just because you hold different opinions from others doesn't mean you dont have to respect theirs.

reply

Thor: The Dark World
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
Taken
The Descent

reply

This one sure was and I bet if I read these topics, inevitably someone is posting on here saying anyone who thinks it's boring is oh so dumb. News flash to that type of person, no matter what meaning a movie has, how clever anything about the story is, etc... it cans till be done in a boring way, thus a failure. I am being nice to give it a 6.

reply

Transformers
Lost in Translation
X-Men
Spider-Man
Garden State

Frankly, most boring movies I tend to forget about and move on. Almost all superhero movies are dumb as f and it annoys the hell out of me that so much superhero dreck keeps getting churned out so those movies stick out in my mind.

Also, Sophia Coppola is massively overrated.

You hate humanity because you are incapable of grasping others opinions do not revolve around yours?

reply

Uhm, no, opinions or not, boring is a whole other thing. People these days have grown into a mindset where they have an attention span of an infant child or a *beep* goldfish, and it's sickening.
Soo many great movies on the lists here presented in this thread, and to see that people find those movies boring, is just disgusting how people's attention span have gone down the drain soo much in the last couple of decades....

I've seen around 95% of the films that people put on their list in this thread, and none of them are boring....
