How is it that the two main stars…
…are the ones so horribly miscast? Zendaya is the worst offender of course, but Timothée is also quite awful in this. What were they thinking?

shareBoth were good in part 1. Casting was ok.
Zendaya just needed to act a little angry and mistrusting in her short scenes, and she can do that.
Chalamet had a relatively small role in part 1, so the cracks didn't show as much.
Problem is that they increased their screen time and neither of them are lead role material, and it's visible. And they have very limited acting skills.
Most likely both will never have a "lead role" career.
Zendaya has one mode: pouty and “fierce”. She does the exact same thing with her face, of course, but the surrounding scene determines if that face is emoting pouty or fierce.
Chalamet has two modes: unconvincing yelling and charmless pretty boy. The studio just hopes that we don’t notice either of those things since there are currently zero young actors with the masculinity needed to make this role work. So they just threw Ms. Nonthreatening Androgynous Theater School Boy into the mix and prayed to God that it would fly with audiences.
Seriously, imagine if any other director had helmed Dune. Without Villeneuve’s visuals, this take on Herbert’s story would be an absolute disaster. Unfortunately, even professional critics aren’t able to differentiate between eye candy and quality these days, so they leave this hot mess thinking that they witnessed a masterpiece.
What a waste.
