Hi there,
Well, let me phrase it this way: the film does make a lot of fun of sexuality. Every kind of sexuality. So it's not really a film where you can ask if somebody is gay or straight or bi - they pretty much do what they get, and there are many black-humor-jokes about being hetero AND about being gay. I remember reading somewhere that Araki was dissed by some gay spokespersons when he was in a relationship with one of his recurring actresses, and I felt as if the film truly was a nod towards sexual extremists, saying "Hey look, sexuality is sexuality, you can't put us into any drawer or apply any name. We do as we feel and sleep with who we like and find sexy." So whether you are straight or gay - if you are easily offended by jokes about your sexual orientation, this is not the film to see.
BUT, funny enough, I think apart from some side characters, they are all bi. Most of them have sex with whatever they can get or mention they are "somewhere in between". There's also a threesome scene with two men and a woman. The most memorable sex scene though has to be between Smith and a girl (not spoiling who though). So if I had to apply a tag to the movie, it would be "queer cinema" - but not even because of the bi-sexual overtones, but because the film itself, the way it is made and its intentions, can't be described as anything but "queer".
That said, let me quote the film here, in a scene where Smith's sexuality is discussed by him and Stella, his best friend (quote might be wrong due to my memory).
Smith: I'm NOT gay.
Stella: You're sucking off guys dicks to Lady Gaga playing in the background. There's nothing gayer than that.
EDIT: Oh, as for graphic... it's Gregg Araki. So if you watch NOWHERE, you'll get how graphic this is, both are on the same scale to me when it comes to graphicness.
I'm really surprised BTW that "Lorelai" was Roxane Mesquida!! She's also starring in the amazing RUBBER, and she was gorgeous in the quite flawed FAT GIRL (and guess what, she also has a bunch of sex scenes and shows it all etc. here). Great great actress, and a brilliant role!! Lorelei kicks SO much ass...
The festival ended yesterday by the way, and I talked to many more who saw KABOOM! as one of the absolute highlights (though there were many).
