*Sigh*

People are comparing this movie to Donnie Darko and calling it a rip off, when they don't even have a clue who Gregg Araki is, or the film style he has come to represent. Those of you saying that, have you seen Nowhere? How about Doom Generation or Totally *beep* Up? Those three films are a trilogy, called the Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy.

Apocalypse. You know... the end of the world? It wasn't very significant in the first two, however in Nowhere, there was a very thick coat of misfortune and doom. Nowhere came out in 1997, and was therefore doing the whole "teenager during the end of the world" theme long before Donnie Darko ever came out. Hey, hey... guess what else Araki did before Donnie Darko? He had James Duval in his movie!! So honestly, I don't see where these people are getting off, calling Araki a rip-off. If you think that, you should probably become familiar with his previous work before opening the blabbering hole in your face. Both films are eerie and strange and I can see how one would think they're similiar, but Kaboom, along with Araki's previous work, has it's own unique brand of weird, which shouldn't be confused.

It should also be noted that it seems that a big chunk of Kaboom actually came out of Gregg's incomplete television show "This is how the World Ends". The show was scheduled to air on MTV in 2000 (Again... before Donnie Darko), but was not picked up, and only a pilot episode was shot.

So, there you have it. Why are people making this comparison? It's beyond me, since Kaboom is filled with comedy, sex and has quirky attitude. Donnie Darko has ZERO sex, humor can only be found in the beginning, and overall tone of the movie was very serious. People these days are so quick to rip and tear apart others. If they bothered to educate themselves, they wouldn't look so dumb while doing so.

Thank you for this. It's nice to see someone actually know what they're talking about.

I loved Kaboom, but I would have been interested in seeing how TIHTWE would have played out. I enjoyed the pilot.

I was looking for a positive thread to add to. My goodness, I've never seen so many negative threads on one film's board. I saw "Kaboom" today and I liked it enormously. It was funny, erotic and quite offbeat, but hugely enjoyable. I mean, what's not to like? Some very gorgeous young people having a lot of sex, plus a very intriguing plot.

I didn't think I knew any of Araki's work, but I've discovered that "Mysterious Skin", which I watched on DVD quite recently, was one of his films. I thought that was a riveting and well-acted piece of work. I can see some distinctive similarities between that and "Kaboom", though the latter is much lighter in tone. Obviously I can look on Araki's own board for films, but if anyone has other films of his they'd particularly recommend, I'd be interested to know about them.

Thanks, j-onyx, I'll add them to my rental list at Love Film. I must be a miserable git, but I never expect happiness in films - romcoms make me want to tear my eyes out!

This movie is dreadful and I was hoping it would be somewhat similar in tone to Donnie Darko. Both films deal with the Apocalypse but Donnie Darko manages to be intriguing and clever about it. Kaboom manages to... well it manages to do none of that. Kaboom is simply a terrible movie with a dreadful and incoherent screenplay. I don't understand how those of you who defend this movie consider it in any way good. It starts off decent enough but gets increasingly awful as it goes on. And the ending... good God, it is one of the most incoherent and terribly constructed endings I have ever seen. Just a downright terrible waste of a film.

I can bash this movie as much as I like. If you can't deal with someone not liking this movie then that is your problem, not mine.

Rule over my life? Not even a little bit. I tried to block this movie from my memory.
