*Sigh*
People are comparing this movie to Donnie Darko and calling it a rip off, when they don't even have a clue who Gregg Araki is, or the film style he has come to represent. Those of you saying that, have you seen Nowhere? How about Doom Generation or Totally *beep* Up? Those three films are a trilogy, called the Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy.
Apocalypse. You know... the end of the world? It wasn't very significant in the first two, however in Nowhere, there was a very thick coat of misfortune and doom. Nowhere came out in 1997, and was therefore doing the whole "teenager during the end of the world" theme long before Donnie Darko ever came out. Hey, hey... guess what else Araki did before Donnie Darko? He had James Duval in his movie!! So honestly, I don't see where these people are getting off, calling Araki a rip-off. If you think that, you should probably become familiar with his previous work before opening the blabbering hole in your face. Both films are eerie and strange and I can see how one would think they're similiar, but Kaboom, along with Araki's previous work, has it's own unique brand of weird, which shouldn't be confused.
It should also be noted that it seems that a big chunk of Kaboom actually came out of Gregg's incomplete television show "This is how the World Ends". The show was scheduled to air on MTV in 2000 (Again... before Donnie Darko), but was not picked up, and only a pilot episode was shot.
So, there you have it. Why are people making this comparison? It's beyond me, since Kaboom is filled with comedy, sex and has quirky attitude. Donnie Darko has ZERO sex, humor can only be found in the beginning, and overall tone of the movie was very serious. People these days are so quick to rip and tear apart others. If they bothered to educate themselves, they wouldn't look so dumb while doing so.
