What happened to Araki?

Nowhere, 1997, was actually a pretty fun, well made film with a bunch of up and coming stars, Ryan Phillipe among them, but what's up with Kaboom, dreadful, amateurish, boring, plain bad, very very sad. Nowhere was ahead of it's time, Kaboom is about 10 years behind the times. After Nowhere, I would have thought Araki was headed for cult status and an amazing career. Does anyone know what happened to him after Nowhere?

I can't say what happened to the director, but I guess you can only concoct so many brilliant end-of-the-world plots wrapped around sharp social commentary before it gets old. Then again, Joss Whedon managed to stretch that out on a weekly basis for a good 6 years before he realized it had nowhere left to go and gracefully ended it. Although, seriously, most watchers often exclaimed in dismay, "the end of the world... again?" So much so that Whedon eventually had to have the characters make the same observation so as to spoof his own heavy-handedness.

Don't know what Araki was thinking (needed the paycheck, these themes/characters are much more accepted by a wide audiences these days?) but up until this re-hash I thought all his other movies were pretty brilliant and visually stunning. At least there was still eye candy in this one... maybe it was fresh to any new (younger) audiences?

I would say yes, for sure after 10 years or more it is made for a new audience not familiar with the original.
