They announced it too damn early. Because now we know one of two things:
A: If this takes place after, we know it means they'll survive the rest of the main series, removing suspense.
or
B: It'll be previously unseen scenes from their past in the series, which means we'd know they survive the spin-off, removing suspense
Unless it's a red herring to make their eventual deaths a surprise.
