The Blizzard

What a ridiculous episode. One of the worst.
A) Apparently The Kingdom and Alexandria have fallen, due to the cold (have they not weathered several winters already?). It happened so quickly that Rosita is still pregnant and not showing yet.
B) The "survivors" must brave a brutal blizzard to go ... somewhere else.
C) Despite the alleged extreme cold, most of the survivors are not wearing hats or gloves (maybe they don't have them). But others, including Negan and Judith, don't even bother to zipper up their jackets.
D) The survivors encounters some walkers that are frozen solid (makes sense. I always assumed walkers would have no metabolism to maintain an core body temperature). Yet moments later they encounter walkers hiding under the snow that are not frozen solid. Why? Who knows.

Seems to me that the writers just said "wouldn't a blizzard episode be awesome"?

Wasn't it just The Kingdom that's fallen? They've specifically talked about going to both Hilltop and Alexandria.
They've established earlier in the season that The Kingdom wasn't doing too well. Old piping being one of their probpems. That's why they sent Henry to get blacksmith/metalwork training (or whatever it was).
As for Rosita, I'm pretty sure we see her with a huge belly in that scene.

Can't say I've noticed them being that terribly underdressed, but maybe I've missed that.

I was wondering about why some walkers were frozen completely and the ones under the snow weren't, as well.
Maybe it can be explained by the quick, heavy snow fall, or maybe it was an oversight.

Overall, it was an ok season, imo.
Definitely better than the last two.

They should head south to a warmer place?

That was precisely what it sounded like to me on the past two episodes of Talking Dead.
Seems like it's just been a long-time dream of theirs to do a snow episode.

The blizzard lasted for one night and now they are playing in the snow lol. A slight over reaction to completely abandon a settlement?

Firewood is everywhere and build chimneys!

I wonder if it's supposed to be a comment on climate change, and how it's so bad that even if we mostly died out there'd still be such issues. Not saying if there *would* be or not, I'm not a scientist, just conjecture here.

reply

Probably not. They needed a blizzard because they shot it on a sound stage and used the whiteout to hide the walls in the background.

reply

Lol we need to leave our settlement or else we gonna freeze to death there's no way we'll make it. Next day goofing around throwing snowballs under a sunny day. Top queque

Is it just me or did that snow look incredibly bad. I don't know what GoT does but their snow generally looks decent.

The snow/cold effects were pretty bad in general I feel. You had to look quite closely to see a tiny, tiny bit of breath effects.

And in the 'blizzard', they just seemed to use a bad filter to severely reduce vision. It looked so cheap.

reply

Yes. Their jackets. I may or may not have shouted 'DO UP YOUR FUCKING JACKETS' at the TV. Just WTF? I guess wardrobe thought they looked better with their jackets undone.

reply

Could argue that looser clothing would be better for maneuverability, which would be good in their situation. If walkers or Whisperers attack, won't want to take the time to unzip. I think they were wearing layers. Good catch though

reply

True, but they have made clear numerous times that the walkers are barely a threat anymore and can be dispatched with minimal effort by prodding them in the head with a spoon. Plus the cold has severely compromised their movement. Well, apart from the ones buried in the snow... I guess they went to advanced SEAL team, zombie lessons.
