i would say its overshadowed by the lazy, cringe, and vapid pacing of the show itself, not just the lead up in the episode. think about it, there was nothing here that happened, that didnt happen many times over in breaking bad or game of thrones. its just a shock this time because twd is a show that plays it safe. it keeps all the best characters alive until they've been stretched too thin. if twd had balls, they would have killed off rick instead of writing him into a cellar to be brought out later. Or they would have killed negan off the way he was supposed to be instead of backflipping and turning him into a good little lapdog. This ending wasnt shocking, its just the most ballsy thing to happen on the show ever. take a look at all who died. a bunch of nobodies that we have only ever seen in passing or were just recently introduced to. not one single death mattered. The old woman? big deal. the nerdy girl with glasses? what, two episodes? the highwayman? literally ONE!? I mean the biggest loss probably would have been enid and even that wasnt a dealbreaker. this was just a cheap way to cut down on cost because thats all AMC ever thinks about. Literally no one cared about any of these characters.
