There's more downsides than upsides to be honest. The zombie effects are generally great. Otherwise it's pretty meh.

If you're planning to start from season 1, episode 1? Yes.

Start from the last episode? No. Show won't make sense and this season isn't that good, anyway.

Ok but here is my deal. I live in an apartment building on the 4th floor. My nieghbour who used to be my friend has these rat kids and they are always coming over and hitting things and they wrecked my bean bag chair one time and never patched it up. They are always eating my food and deleting stuff on my DVR for their own personal gain. Last time I tried to kick them the hell right out of my place but I was bonked on the head with a lunch box or stick or something, so if I really start liking this show and really get into season 1 there is always the chance they will ruin it for me, hey also like to leave spoilers on my personal answering maching and under my door to ruin the ending of a show they know I will like and kick the door whilst I am watching.

One time they ate all my trail mix and they don't even like it.

But they just come in anyway and they know when I am home because I gotta walk right by their door you see and they have the fish eye peep hole thing. Its also worselike when I come home with a hot and tasty but fresh and ready pizza then they come out and try to jack my slices! They can hear me through the walls as its a thinn appartment walls so they know when I am home, and they have unlimited access to my hide a key.

Do not waste your time. Honestly, the first 3 seasons are good. After that, the show goes right down the toilet, into the sewers and rots like a corpse on a Summer's day in Africa. Don't be fooled by fanboys of the show either, they literally will be happy with any excrement put on the screen with TWD title preceding it.

The writing is terrible, the storylines are either moving from point A-B or defeating a dangerous group, rinse and repeat.

The production values are awful as well as the directing.

The action the past season has looked like something I and a group of friends could have filmed outside, the quality of directing is that bad.

Save yourself. Don't get sucked in. Watch anything else but TWD. Trust me.

That's the main problem for me now. I usually bail when a show get repetitive. It's really the fault of Kirkman. He swears there will an ending. We'll see.

I say, watch the first four seasons then call it quits. There is an interesting and short story arc that goes from, if I remember correctly, episodes 1-3 of season 5, that's also worth checking out.

I liked the first 4 seasons. The rest are OK. I think it IS a better show than any others on cable TV. But it has not been consistently GREAT since then. We are into the 8th season.
If you read the comics you will probably enjoy it. Give it a go.

Depends, have you ever watched a Zombie movie and thought to yourself I wish it would never, ever, ever end?

If that’s the case then yes this is that wish.

I love zombie films and I barely made it to the end of season 4.
