"AMC Networks filed an immense trove of emails from fired 'Walking Dead' executive producer Frank Darabont on Thursday. They give a rare behind-the-scenes look at the tensions that go into a prestige cable show. Darabont has said the tone and the 'hyperbole' were the result of a crisis on the show, and that he stands by the substance of the emails 'to the last detail.'” http://variety.com/2017/tv/news/frank-darabont-walking-dead-emails-rage-boils-over-1202494598/
I haven't read the emails yet (I'm about to), all I know is that for me the show stopped being interesting when Darabont was fired. The difference was visible.
The stuff reports are spotlighting is where Darabont gets screwed over by someone and he's ranting and raving about it. He was having to do a lot more work than he should have because he was having to pick up where others were dropping the ball and became very frustrated by it. But overall, the show with him at the controls was the best it ever was or likely ever will be.
Those emails were a quick read. I can totally see why he was frustrated so much. This is what happens when a perfectionist is surrounded by people who don't have a vision and are in it only for a paycheck. Darabont has a talent for creative insulting, that's for sure.
"Seeing those dailies today left me gobsmacked and thinking I should fake my own death, leave town, and live under an assumed name." 😋
Darabont, with those emails, became the very first critic who ripped TWD a new asshole for its incompetent, lazy, and talentless scriptwriting. Consider how frequent this has been apparent on the show since he was fired...he was right.
They come free of context and as part of an obvious well-poisoning agenda, so it's hard to judge much about them. Darabont isn't a mean guy. The people who work with him love him and go from project to project with him. A whole slew of them agreed to work for less money than they'd normally be paid just for the opportunity to work with him on TWD. AMC was putting the screws to him all along.
What I got from this is that Darabont has zero self control and probably isn't a good person to work with. Im not fully siding with AMC since they're cheap and have their own issues but this gives you a lot of insight in to why he was let go. Hes a loose cannon.
On one hand, we see Darabont as this man who has been pushed to the VERY edge because of the behind the scenes f-ups with this show, and it even shows possibly how inexperienced some of the crew actually is (camera operator, a couple of the directors). I'll even go far as saying Darabont is a man who is very particular about his shots. The fact that AMC trimmed the budget in the second season was inexcusable, especially if they've been doing this with each passing season (which wouldn't be surprising at all in the slightest). Darabont tried standing his ground, and its this very reason that got him replaced. It shows that when it comes to a well acclaimed director such as himself, even he couldn't fight the BS going on with AMC, and now adays it's the only way now: AMC's way, or you're out.
On the other hand, though, without knowing what Darabont is like behind the scenes of his other productions, it leads one to wonder if he's always been like this, and if he has, then holy shit do I or others not want to work with this guy if its possible he'd lose his shit at the drop of a hat. He seems to be a man who REALLY does not like to divert from the scripts by the SLIGHTEST. Hell, I don't think he approves of any scripts but the ones HE wrote. Granted, its possible the screenwriters in Season 1 were THAT bad that Darabont had to rewrite to keep production going. But Jesus, to declare OUT LOUD that people will drop dead because of mistakes is something one whispers to himself or to family and friends who are not in said business. While Darabont being VERY particular about his shots can be a good thing under GOOD circumstances, he does not seem like the type to adapt when necessary (despite the fact it wasn't necessary at all to trim the budget in the first place).
Yeah I mean I get his frustration but you gotta keep a level head. The things he said were unforgivable. Im not sure who I want to win this battle. I am not a fan of either side anymore.

Darabont, as I said, has a sterling reputation and a devoted group of coworkers who go with him from project to project. All you're seeing in those emails is what AMC wants you to see.
I agree, its what they WANT us to see. What I'M seeing is the company's ineptitude and failure to gather a decent crew for Darabont to work with, pushing him to the edge and making him wish death upon others. Even with Darabont gone, it's a wonder how the hell this show is still afloat or how ANY of the cast members are still stuck in this type of work environment.
