What they should do is return to series roots, essentially seasons 1-3. The pacing was better, the atmosphere, music, overall a better experience. Since their escape from Terminus, I have found this show is missing a lot of what made the earlier seasons so good, much faster and sensical pacing.
I'm hoping after All out War, it does just that.

I'd love to see them use winter weather sometime, DC gets some really cold days too, and heck even the comics have snow and ice from time to time.

We can look at the PS3/4 game The Last of Us to see that walkers/zombies/infected have no trouble in snowy conditions. :)

The pacing was better,
THIS IS KEY!!
The writers need to add details and back story about how the character lives were before the zombie apocalypse... no one talks about specific memories, people they knew, things that add depth to each person. Instead we get overly dramatic philosophizing that turns trite because they do it every single week. What writers do they like, what shows did they watch, what music did they listen to... how did they feel about politics, etc. The actual plots and the different people and political organizations they meet are reasonably interesting but whoever writes these people know nothing about character development.
share"The writers need to add details and back story about how the character lives were before the zombie apocalypse... no one talks about specific memories, people they knew, things that add depth to each person"
Oh god, that is the LAST thing this show needs. Really, I don't care two shits what Rick did as a Sheriff, or Glenn as a pizza delivery guy, or anyone else. That crap got old on LOST really fast, and here it would be interminable agony to put up with it.
What matters is what the characters do NOW; in that sense, The Walking Dead is an existensial show, and that's a strength, not a detriment.
But I do agree there can be way too much "overly dramatic philosophizing" that should disappear...immediately. A little of that goes a real long way, and it should kept to a minimum for when it's needed. And being needed doesn't mean almost every show, which sure feels like the case here.
It depends how you do it... Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Linklater, the Coen brothers and in television Vince Gilligan, David Chase, Matthew Weiner all add rich details to their universe whether it's in the course of conversation or the production design. The only character that has been remotely interesting recently is Eugene... every one else is as flat as an 8 bit video game avatar.

Speaking of Eugene, I absolutely loved seeing him in Savoir land! He is very interesting, and I never knew it. His back story seems so cool, as we don't really know what is his "delusions of grandeur" LOL
shareYeah so far he's not a good person but at least he's interesting... that girl who was showing him around savior land was pretty cool too.
shareYes indeed. I am 50/50 that he is "playing" Negan. I am just not sure?
shareHis biggest crime so far is teaching Negan how to armorize the walkers. In this society it's almost the equivalent of the Manhattan Project unless Rick found a bunch of bazookas and flame throwers. So in a way, he's already tilted a lot further to the chaotic/evil side, even if he didn't mean it.
shareGood point.
shareThat's true but I don't think he really had a choice and IF he is playing the long game (I'm not sure he is) I expect he thinks this is small potatoes. That said, I think he's just enjoying the power and status he has there.
shareI'd like to think that I'm a forgiving person... the type that tries to consider extenuating circumstances before I'd write someone off, but Eugene is quickly going past the point of redemption even though I find him to be overall an entertaining character. I was feeling sorry for Dwight until he set up the Doctor and now here goes Eugene again with more cowardly bullshit. I want the writers to find a way for him to redeem himself but it's getting close to the point where he'd have to sacrifice his life to win back the viewers' affection.
shareI don't think Eugene has to be sacrificed (yet) but if were to be found out to be 'playing' Negan, that would redeem himself. As of now, I'm not sure. He definitely is enjoying his new status.

Thanks, I'm still a fan of the show and I'm not a hater but if I were a hitchhiker on a long desert road I'd ask to get out if I had to listen to Rick and Michonne talk for hours. Excruciating stuff

The Walking Dead almost falls into the guilty pleasure category for me... I'd never mention it in the same breath as Game of Thrones, The Wire, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Mad Men... but it's frustrating because it wouldn't take that much to bump it up to the next level. With all the money they make they could just throw it at the showrunners and writers from cancelled HBO shows like Boardwalk Empire etc and the problem would be solved. Don't even get me started on Fear the Walking Dead...

The first season was very good and tight.. and there have been decent moments throughout but I never have regarded TWD at the highest level, mostly second tier by my personal standard. I think what they should've done regarding a spinoff is jump fifty years in the future where it would make sense that people have changed their dialect and varied cultures have emerged. They are trying to create a Star Trek vibe where each community has its own distinct idiosyncrasies but this just wouldn't have happened over the course of five even ten years.
shareIt can't be compared to GOT which has such a rich and complex universe, I don't think any show could compare to that! I enjoy it as much as I enjoyed Breaking Bad though which I think is very overrated.
shareI feel like I'm the only one enjoying this season.. this last episode in particular seems to have been a return to the old days of fighting walkers rather than the show taking itself too seriously.. and some of the walkers have become quite comic book' like the weird monster at the junkyard and the woman in today's episode! And I love Negan as a villain!
I also agree that I would like to see what some of the characters were like before the zombies took over, I would like to see Negan and Jesus' back stories for example because I'm sure they were just regular guys before all this happened.. what makes a regular guy become a 'character' like we see now?
I do agree that the show has become slightly formulaic with the 'new town, new villain' plot but I'm enjoying it this season.. Negan is certainly more interesting than the Govenor!
Nah, you're not the only one. This is a good season. I'm excited for next week.
shareGlad to hear it! Me and my husband were discussing that it does seem to have become a bit more 'comic book' and unrealistic but it's a show about zombies, what do we expect? I hope the rest of the season plays out well!

I agree they are a bit inconsistent on the rules (i.e. why do they not cover themselves in zombie guts every time of it means the zombies don't notice them?) but I guess there wouldn't be a show if there wasn't a bit of tension sometimes!
share[deleted]
It certainly would be different.. I think they've become too focused on showing how man is the real threat in this world when at its heart, it's a zombie show and we want to see zombies.

I didn't really like the Govenor as a character whereas I quite like King Ezekiel.. he has admitted that it's all an act to keep his people believing in something but that doesn't bother me.. I agree about the Junkyard group though, I'm not a fan of them (yet at least).. I guess it's just a case of different people liking different elements and I'm enjoying all the different groups joining together.
shareYou're not the only one! This season has been great, and I really liked yesterday's episode. I do hate Negan though. Can't wait to see him die!
shareHe's the character I love to hate.. I want our characters to get revenge on him for Abraham and Glenn and yes, for them, he should go but I enjoy him as a character so it will also be a shame to not see him in it anymore.
