MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE ENDING So about Duke

Am I the only one who was PARTICULARLY disappointed in Duke's ending?
To me we watched Duke develop and change SO MUCH over the years. From a somewhat cowardly criminal, to a man struggling with all the people pushing him to being a murderer, to a selfless man who was so different from the one we knew. Yet he's the one who dies in the end? To me a lot of the characters just stagnated after a while, but Duke always seemed to be evolving, I almost felt it was HIS story for a time, not to mention he always seemed to be the one who wanted to leave town the MOST. Like he truly wanted to put Haven behind him, in a way Audrey and Nathan never totally seemed to want to do. Yet HE'S the one who bites it in the end? Why of all characters did he not get a happy ending? And why by being POSSESSED of all things, it wasn't him, it was a creature controlling him. I felt like they really invalidated so much of Duke's journey to have it simply end in death.

I feel the opposite. Duke had no place to go and no one to go with. His final act was the ultimate sacrifice for his friends. That completed the complete reversal of his character from the beginning of the show. I can't think of a more epic ending for him.

reply

I agree. I think Duke got a proper send off (and let's not forget he got to come back as a ghost too) and when I heard one of the main characters was going to be killed off in the final season it was pretty obvious it was going to be Duke. I know some Duke fans might be still disappointed with the ending and that Audrey ended up with Nathan instead of Duke but I never saw Audrey and Duke as a realistic couple and knew from the moment she touched Nathan and he could feel it Audrey would end up with Nathan. It was like one of those moments in a Romantic Comedy and you just knew it was going to happen.

So I am confused. Are there only five seasons? Because I never saw Duke as a ghost. And the last I saw was he was the "open Pandora box" spewing all manner of evil "Troubles" on Haven. This after Mara went away, and Audrey was left.
Maybe only part of season five has been released on Netflix? I hope someone will respond. I admit, I had come to love Duke as a character, and liked him more than any other. He had so much more depth than anyone else.

reply

Yeah only the first part of season 5 has even released on Netflix so far.

reply

To finish the fifth season, I have had to buy episodes 14-26 on Amazon.

Be careful who you hate, it could be someone you love.

reply

I don't know about Netflix but you can buy Season 5 Part 2 on Amazon if you are looking to finish off the rest of the season. While it wasn't as good as some of the earlier seasons I quite liked it and enjoyed the ending. πŸ˜ƒ

Duke was my favorite character until halfway through S4 where it clearly stopped being an ensemble show and was ALL about Duke.

reply

No, you're not the only one. I just watched the finale and I'm so sad for Duke :(
I mean, the whole thing was emotional anyway, but that final scene with the three of them in the station ... omg; one of the most heart wrenching things I've ever watched I think. I was shouting at the screen so much during those last couple of episodes. He was a really great character and I would so have loved to have seen him in a Trouble-free Haven with Audrey and Nathan.
That said; it was all so well done. If he was going to die, that was the best way to do it, with what Nathan and Audrey said to him and everything. And I loved his acting when Croatoan had him.
This is definitely going to be one of those series I watch again and again ...

Duke is nuke
I'm Blade brown, the Dopest, illest, hypest brotha, on the block!

Duke's death didn't surprise or shocked me since it was foreseen back in season 1 by the hands of a guard symbol person. When Nathan got the tattoo it was another warning who was going to kill him.
IMO, Duke was a walking dead man for a long time.

I thought Duke's death was perfect. After royally screwing over Nathan & Audrey in Season 5A, this was his redemption. I've hated Duke since the end of Season 3/start of Season 4 and wasn't sorry to see him die, but the scene was written and performed SO well, that I actually teared up.

reply

Oh I know...his death made me cry too. After they killed off Jennifer, who I loved, I really felt like Duke would not survive the show. His soul mate was gone and he was the holding vessel for so many Troubles.

It's called a hustle, sweetheart. 🐰🐱
