That good?
Could this movie be up for award shows next?
shareBiopix sez no so not actin awardz. But song yes.
shareYes, I expect it to be nominated for several Oscars, including best picture, actor, and actress. Lady Gaga will likely win best actress.
shareWow! I didn't even know there was another remake! Can't wait to see it if Sam Elliott is in it! 🙂
shareNot even close to that good. You will be in pain as you watch them try to portray her "bad work conditions." When she is leaving work and her """mean""" 'ol boss (white male) tells her that it is HER TURN TO TAKE OUT THE TRASH .... omg, what criminal conditions. Truly she was a sad, abused worker pining for stardom. I think I heard someone yell "oh no he didn't!" And then there comes to pass the last straw. The final grievance. Her boss has the audacity to tell her that she is late. OMFG!! Oh no he di'uhnt! You will stand up and cheer as she quits her job after that.
You won't believe your eyes as you watch an obvious super star transform into a super star. Her complete lack of small town "who me?" charm is presented as small town "who me?" charm.
And if you didn't think she was a tough girl then you will change your mind when she punches out some regular dude for asking for a picture from the guy she just met. Such effrontery! Then the girl stood up for the guy!! This is truly a woke generation.
Add to this the bathtub argument. You'll love this part. They somehow derail a train going 5 MPH with an ill-conceived argument from out of nowhere. Both actors seem to be ad-libing this scene but I secretly think that Cooper was doing damage control while Gaga was ad-libing (much like a handful of other scenes)
Worried that the movie will end too soon? Relax! You will take a few small vacations in the middle of this film to meet a troop of crossdresser performers. Their personalities are so bold and loud that you will instantly like them. These dudes are funny and probably more engaging than anyone else in the movie you nearly forgot that you were watching. Technically a complete waste of time but actually a cool drink of water in a marathon of boredom.
However, you will not starve to death watching this. There are many good songs to distract you from the preview bullet points gradually recurring. Sam does well and the post-humous song scene is emotional and well done.
Quite harsh but true nonetheless.
A movie that is hiped for the times we live in, but if you analyze it with an objective lens it falls short.
I did not believe gaga´s performance at any time during this movie. I liked Cooper, he´s really good, as well as Sam Elliot who is just charming and charismatic in anything he does (Even the TV show the Ranch which is just watchable for him).
The movie is just dull, as you said, a stupid backstory for Gaga, who just has a normal job, that makes her do her duties (take the garbage out) and be on time...
She stopped singing because she went to different agents and told her that she was just ugly, too ugly to make it in the music industry. Really?! come on, is that why you stopped singing? Too stupid to believe, in my opinion, they should've got a better reason, some cliche would´ve been better (i.e. maybe have an ill father to take care off, therefore having to get a job to get money to pay for her medical bills). But just too ugly? Too big of a nose, alright...
The movie is not a 0 but definitely not an 8.4. For me its a 6 just because of Cooper, Sam Elliot, and the songs which yes, Gaga has a fantastic voice. The movie lacks script and character development.
Yeah I guess I have to give Cooper some credit. I always like him. There was so much in the script for him that was bad though. Can I blame him for that? Maybe. Did he write the screenplay? If so then the worthless tinnitus subplot is his fault as well as the scattered uncharacteristically bad moments from him. But sure, he was mostly good. Easy to forget when I'm achieving zero suspension of disbelief.
I enjoyed several of the songs and as you said, Sam Elliot is always A+. (did you see him without facial hair in Justified?) I sorta liked Dice in it too even though he kinda chews the scenery a little. He is somehow lovable so I forgive a lot.
Look, I'm not a huge Gaga fan but I do like her. I wanted her to be good in this. Having seen her on SNL a few times, I knew that it was going to have to be a miracle of acting practice to get her into big screen form. I will give her credit for improving from zero star to two star quality. That's something. Just still not very good.
The movie could have been much worse. The overwhelming adoration can only be as a result of fans enjoying the music (or celeb worship) so much that they can't see the crappy vehicle it came in.
In fact, I think Cooper did co-write the script. At least IMDb is giving him credit for the screenplay so he is partly to blame on the poor character development.
I do have to give him props for directing, some scenes were pretty good directed, I liked the ******Spoilers******
the last scene where he kills himself I thought it was quite well directed.
you could see what was coming, and it builds the tension a bit for me. I liked the fact that he cooks a steak (which is the most demanded last dinner meal of choice for the death penalty inmates in the US, and the proceeds to give it to his dog, which I interpreted that he believes he's not even worth it to have it). I like those kinds of messages in moves it makes them a bit deeper and more interesting to rewatch to catch on those things. Even though this move is not rewatchable in my opinion.
I am not a huge fan of Gaga but I can see she has a great voice, acting not so much, she is getting better, as you said, from SNL, still has a long way to go, and judging from the critics we are going to see a whole lot more of gaga on movies on the future.
Will see how she evolves, I hope she keeps improving.
I agree with some of the directing. My favorite parts were due to the directing. When she is singing the song he wrote for her at the end of the movie and it transitions back to when she first heard it was very well done.
On the steak thing: Your take is interesting. I thought that it was to demonstrate that he wasn't doing it for himself but rather for someone else. Thus the selflessness of his last meal.
And yeah, given the OTT raving for this, we will see more Gaga on screen. She got better which means that she can. Here is hoping that her next venture will be worthy of the acclaim. I think she is attractive so I'm not opposed to judging her further.
As usual I think Hollywood over hypes...but that doesn't mean it wasn't good.
It doesn't have to fall into one extreme or the other.
I haven't seen the other versions except for the 1975 version and for me this one worked better.
I thought Kris Kristofferson was excellent (despite his voice) in that 1975 version as the hardcore but vulnerable falling star . But Barbra Streisand, although a beautiful voice, was just not right for the role. Not to me.
She's too middle of the road pop old fashioned to fit into the path of a hard rocker and she tends to take over every role she does. It always becomes all about her.
This version seemed to concentrate on both the rising and the falling star which I found more appealing. I thought Lady Gaga did a great job and was very charismatic with her plainer less plastic persona of a regular but talented woman trying to find her way.
I've never been a fan and I've never seen her act before. I didn't even know she could really sing until she did that Sound of Music tribute a few years ago.
Some singers can never make that transition to acting, like Madonna...but others like Cher or Whitney Houston, seem to be naturals. I think Lady Gaga is a natural.
But it's really Bradley Cooper that continues to impress. A few years ago I would've just thought him another shallow pretty face but he continues to up his game. He helped write the script and the songs, directed and sang and played a character that is not Bradley Cooper.
I think he did a good job at all of these things. It was a risk but it paid off and he deserves some credit.
As far as character development...; they are working with the bones of a familiar story and have to stay within certain parameters. An overnight sensation's sudden rise doesn't allow a lot of wiggle room.
